Pixies Reunion: How do you feel when your favourite band reunites?

In 2004 when The Pixies, a longtime favourite of mine, announced they were reuniting for a big tour, my only emotion was disappointment. No, I wasn’t eager to see them reunite. I was satisfied with the canon of amazing work they’d already released, and also happy with the music that Frank Black had created as a solo artist since their demise in 1993. From 1988 to 1991 the band released one amazing album after another - that’s four consistent albums in four consecutive years. Frank Black is nothing if not prolific. I kind of like thinking back to that Pixies “era” - the amazingly short blitzkrieg of years that they were successful - and I have nothing but fond memories.

So earlier today when P4K announced that their reunion was once again back on, I guffawed. They’re slated to play the UK’s Isle of Wight Festival this summer on June 14. I can’t scare up the excitement to see these guys release new music right now. I kind of think their time has passed, and I’m satisfied enough with the music they’ve already released. It can’t get better.

And that’s the same reason that, unlike every music blog and mag out there, I’m not clamouring for a Stone Roses or Smiths reunion. I think both bands have made their contributions to music in the incarnations that existed in the late 80s. I’m fine with Ian Brown and Morrissey both carrying the torch forward and writing their own solo material.

So how do YOU feel? Are you happy and excited at the prospect of hearing new material when a band reunites? Or are you bummed out that this band you once held close to your heart like a cool secret is now being co-opted by every single outlet available, or going after the money that comes with a big reunion tour?

  1. it’s all about money isn’t it? because the voice will not be the same and magic will be lost because I’m seeing them at the new verizon center downtown. Big woop!. but I guess everyone needs money so more power to them.
