Graham Van Pelt - Miracle Fortress
You may recall the first ever Polaris Prize in 2006…Final Fantasy came away a winner with the $20,000 prize, but it was Malajube who stole the show. At the gala event in Toronto, Malajube stole everyone’s hearts with a quick set of selections from their album Trompe L’Oeil, despite laryngitis, fatigue and several lingering sicknesses. They’re the band that everyone was talking about after that night!
Lo and behold, the awards are back again this year with the nominees announced earlier today. Polaris is cool ’cause it rewards Canadian artists for their creativity and not for
their album sales. So a totally cool band like that’s enjoyed critical (but not necessarily commercial) success can come away a winner!
This year’s nominees:
Arcade Fire - Neon Bible
The Besnard Lakes - The Besnard Lakes Are The Dark Horse
The Dears - Gang of Losers
Julie Doiron - Woke Myself Up
Feist - The Reminder
Junior Boys - So This Is Goodbye
Miracle Fortress - Five Roses
Joel Plaskett Emergency - Ashtray Rock
Chad VanGaalen - Skelliconnection
Patrick Watson - Close To Paradise
IMO The Dears, Arcade Fire & Feist are all too established to win this award. I feel like the frontrunners are Junior Boys and Miracle Fortress. Junior Boys have had a great year and their second album So This Is Goodbye has been super well received. And Think About Life/Miracle Fortress have had a huge push in the blogosphere. Time will tell - the winner will be announced in Toronto on September 24!
