Tomorrow the 2011 Polaris Music Prize longlist will be whittled down from 40 nominees to ten, when the shortlist is announced at the Drake Hotel in Toronto by by CBC Radio 3′s Grant Lawrence and The Wedge‘s own Damian Abraham.
If you search hard enough, you can likely find a bookie out there who is taking bets on which ten artists will make the list, but we here at The Wedge have placed our own bets. Well, no money has been exchanged, but bragging rights are at stake. And in some office settings, being right trumps the hard earned dollar (actually, that’s not true at all).
Members of The Wedge team, Producer Jason Richards and Researcher Cam Lindsay, have each chosen the ten artists they think will be called out Wednesday afternoon.
Jason Richards:
Arcade Fire – The Suburbs
Austra – Feel It Break
D-Sisive – Jonestown 2: Jimmy Go Bye Bye
Destroyer – Kaputt
Diamond Rings – Special Affections|
Dirty Beaches – Badlands
Galaxie – Tigre et diesel
One Hundred Dollars – Songs Of Man
Timber Timbre – Creep On Creepin’ On
The Weeknd – House Of Balloons
Cam Lindsay:
Arcade Fire – The Suburbs
Braids – Native Speaker
Destroyer – Kaputt
Diamond Rings – Special Affections
PS I Love You – Meet Me At The Muster Station
The Rural Alberta Advantage – Departing
Ron Sexsmith – Long Player Late Bloomer
Colin Stetson – New History Warfare Vol. 2: Judges
Timber Timbre – Creep On Creepin’ On
The Weeknd – House Of Balloons
The 2011 winner will be revealed at CTV’s Concert Hall studios at Toronto’s Masonic Temple on Monday, September 19th at the Polaris Music Prize gala. The event is broadcast live on Sirius channel 152 and CBC Radio 3 and will also be broadcast on MuchMusic and muchmusic.com.
Past winners have been Final Fantasy, Patrick Watson, Caribou, Fucked Up, and Karkwa.
