Prepare Yourself For Inception!

July 13th, 2010

Inception is coming Friday, July 16!!

Christopher Nolan’s Inception is almost here (this Friday!) and all the buzz I’ve been hearing is that it’s gonna be good: “matrix-level-Neo-dodging-bullets-in-slo-mo-style” good. It’s being hailed as one of those movies that screw with your mind, where you need to pick apart the pieces to get the real story behind the story you’re actually watching.

All we know is that the movies revolves around dreaming and the subconscious…AND Leonardo Dicaprio…..so, to wet your appetites, here are some of those “other movies”, the “one of those movies category” that Inception falls into. They all deal with trusting (or not trusting) your memories, and figuring out what is real and what isn’t (which these movies show can be a hard time, but as long as you have a few sexy lead actors, you’re pretty much good to go!)

Check ‘em out and get ready to see Inception on Friday! Click for more trailers and movies!

Do I know you?

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004, Jim Carrey, Kate Winslet, Kirsten Dunst): A very common premise (scorned lover trying to forget a past love) takes a very sci-fi approach as, lo and behold, a new science has developed where you can literally erase your memories! So, recently single Jim Carrey decides to erase the memories of the girl who broke his heart, Kate Winslet. But, as someone else uses his memories to get the girl, Jim needs to figure out how his life is going to turn out if he erases his past. A very smart blend of real-life drama mixed with science-fiction elements!

Do Mememtos really help you remember? or change the story?

Memento (2000, Guy Pierce, Carrie-Anne Moss, Joe Pantoliano):
Short-term memory disorder shows you really can’t trust your own mind. As our hero (Guy Pierce) tries to find out who murdered his wife……we get a lesson in non-linear story telling and put the pieces of the puzzle together ourselves without the help of the characters in the movie. And when you get the real story of what’s going on…..WOW!

What is the Matrix?

The Matrix Trilogy (1999-2003, Keanu Reeves, Laurence Fishborne, Carrie-Anne Moss):
The ultimate mind-screw (yeah….you know what word I’m going for…..). Almost ten years ago since the original graced the big screen, this movie launched techno-theories, theology classes, books, comics, new technology (the 360-camera angles) and our own fear of what might actually happen in the future if we develop AI. Imagine waking up every morning….but really not waking up at all…. ***cue chill running down spine***

Brad Pitt plus soap......

Fight Club (1999, Ed Norton, Brad Pitt, Helena Bonham Carter):
It’s a film about the workforce’s next generation fighting against advertising and corporations bending the truth. But there’s more to the story, as the characters are not all what they seem. A major twist shows who everyone really is (and how you should have picked up on it!!), and how they’ve influenced the story right from the beginning. Sorry – can’t be more specific than that – you’ve gotta rent the movie!

What makes us tick?

Dark City (1998, Rufus Sewell, Jennifer Connelly, Kiefer Sutherland):
What happens if every day, your memory changes, your husband or wife changes, your job changes, your entire life changes…..and you have no idea what life you lived yesterday? That’s the premise behind Dark City…..where a man (Rufus Sewell) slowly pieces together bits of memories that reveal everyday everyone’s lives changes…..sometimes for the better, sometimes for worse…..

Medal of Honour or cover-up?

Courage Under Fire (1996, Denzel Washington, Meg Ryan, Lou Diamond Phillips):
The least sci-fi of my choices, it stills screws with your mind by not telling the whole story. Or rather telling it a few different times, and leaving it up to you to piece together what really happened. Denzel plays a military investigator who looks into the fictional account of the first woman, Meg Ryan, being awarded the Medal of Honour after her death. However, every testimony he gets paints a different picture, and you have to wonder if you can believe everything you’re being shown….
