Pretty Little Liars Ep. 12: The Lady Killer

It’s the most shocking episode in Pretty Little Liars history with tonight’s mid-season finale. The girls see more death and destruction and another innocent bystander gets caught in A’s cross-hairs.

Garrett’s trial for Maya’s murder is beginning and that means reporters have camped out on Emily’s lawn in hopes of getting an exclusive with the victim’s girlfriend. Spencer, Aria and Hanna are staging an intervention with Emily to tell her that they think Paige is A after learning Paige was tortured by Alison, jealous of Maya and carrying around Alison’s earring from her coffin.

Emily storms out as soon as the intervention begins, but the girls stop her long enough to show Emily the earring. Emily thinks A planted the earring in Paige’s bag. Hm. Didn’t think about that.

Emily is so upset with the girls that she skips school, while Spencer spends her time in between classes having a confrontation with Paige, who is holding a field hockey stick, an item that was used as a weapon against Alison. I’m not saying she’s A. But I’m not saying she’s not A.

Paige is comforting Emily when Emily reveals that the girls think someone else is working with A. Emily tells Paige about Alison’s grave and Paige realizes the girls think she’s A. Paige quickly leaves when she receives a text telling her to be at the cemetery on Saturday night at 10 pm. Who dat from?

When Hanna realizes that Paige skipped the rest of the day to be with Emily, the girls decide to call Emily’s parents and tell them everything. But before they can do that, they receive a text from A telling them to stand down or else Emily will get hurt. The girls are in Hanna’s room when Spencer gets another message from A, this time telling the girls to bring Maya’s bag to the cemetery at the same time Paige is going to be there.

If Paige got the same note does this clear her of being A? Caleb walks in and scares the crapola out of the girls, who thankfully show Caleb the email and he tells the girls that they’re not going alone. Good! Nothing good happens when they try to keep everything a secret.

Later that day after the girls leave, Hanna finds Caleb packing heat in her room and Hanna tells him to get rid of the gun immediately. Getting rid of it means putting it in Hanna’s sock drawer and throwing it away on Monday. But when Hanna leaves the room, Caleb leaves with the gun.

Toby is back in Rosewood and Spencer is happy to see him. Like, really happy. Is this their first time with each other?

They exchange ‘I love you’s’, giving Spencer the incentive she needs to go to battle against A and get her life back.

Maggie shows up at Ezra’s apartment and is stunned to see Aria, but pretends that she’s never seen the girl before. When Ezra goes to the door to speak to a neighbour, Maggie asks Aria to stay quiet about what she knows until Maggie can figure out her next move.

Annnnd Mona is out!

From one costume to another, Mona is back in her black hoody and getting a call from…someone. Paige? Nate? Not wasting any time, Mona heads to her new ‘A’ layer, complete with creepy dolls and pictures of the girls. There is a second A waiting for her there, but who is it?

Upset with her friends and tired of being on display because of Maya’s trial, Emily decides to join Nate for the weekend with him to a small Inn outside of town.

The girls are thankful that Emily will be out of town when they meet A at the cemetery, but no one shows up. Caleb is nearby and listening to their conversation on a walkie talkie. He begins to put the pieces together and realizes that A was setting the girls up to get Emily all alone. Caleb takes off to find Emily at the Inn and the girls follow behind him, taking Maya’s bag with him as collateral.

At the Inn, Emily wakes up on the couch to a phone call and a voice recording telling her that she has one minute to get out of the house. Apparently the terrifying voice on the other end of the line isn’t affecting Emily the way it’s affecting me (GET OUT!), and Emily takes her time, instead looking through Nate’s bag, where she finds an envelope with her address.

Before she can search anymore, Nate is back with firewood and yellow paint on his boots. Emily begins going through the pictures on her phone and realizes where she’s seen Nate’s paint splattered boots before – in a picture with Maya from True North. Nate isn’t Maya’s cousin! He knows her from True North! But then who is he really?

Starting to get scared, Emily tells Nate that she wants to go for a walk, really hoping that she’ll be able to find a cell phone signal. Nate follows Emily outside and drags her back into the house, forcing her to watch a video of Maya telling Emily that she’s staying at Noel’s cottage and spotted her stalker from True North.

The stalker is Nate and he’s going to make Emily watch while he takes something from her the way she took Maya from him. Nate opens the closet door to reveal Paige bound and gagged!

Emily tries to get Nate talking to stop him from hurting Paige and Nate admits that he met Maya at True North, saying the dead girl loved him and left him. Nate is ready with his knife to kill Paige right in front of Emily, but thankfully Nate hears a sound outside and goes to check on it.

Emily takes the opportunity to escape and Nate follows her, chasing her up a lighthouse.

The two begin to fight to the death and Emily manages to get a hold of Nate’s gun, stabbing him in the stomach.

Caleb, who saw them run into the lighthouse, finds Emily and comforts her, putting his gun down next to them. And then – the gun shot.

Spencer, Aria and Hanna finally arrive to see Nate in a body bag and Caleb unconscious after Nate shot him in the stomach before succumbing to his wounds.

Hanna is inconsolable and Emily is unable to focus on the police questions. Thankfully, Paige saves Emily and takes over all the questions, allowing Emily to comfort Hanna.

At the hospital, the girls wait while Caleb is in surgery. Mrs. Hastings meets them there, but she’s not alone. Mrs. Hastings thanks Emily for getting an innocent man out of jail. An innocent, still terrifying man.

Mona is back in her nurses uniform and is escorted by the other A to the hospital. She’s disappointed they weren’t able to pin Maya’s murder on Paige and agree to get Maya’s phone out of Paige’s purse, which they planted there.
