The Olympics are in full swing and by now, you’ve got your viewing patterns down to a science. You’ve waited two years for this, or four if you’re just into the whole ‘Winter’ thing. You love that there is always something to watch on TV when the Olympics are happening and are already mourning the end of another Games. Still, you know that being a fan of the Olympics comes with its problems and you’ve faced them all.
You make reservations at a bar at 4 in the afternoon to watch a hockey game with a bunch of other fans, only to realize that the game is being played at 4 pm in Russia, making it 6 am in many parts of North America.
You try to not spoil the outcome of events for others when you’re watching on repeat, even though you got up early and totally read everyone’s scores online.
Casual Olympic watchers ask to join you to watch events and continue to try to jinx your faves by saying “They’ve got this” or “They can’t possibly lose”.
Trying to understand the rules of a sport you become a superfan of every four years and ignore the 48 months in-between.
Speaking of confused, how can someone be born in one country, train in a different country, change their nationality and then represent some place you’ve never heard of?
When you watch a sappy montage on your favourite athlete and then see them lose the event they’ve spent their whole life training for and their parents worked three jobs to pay for lessons and their little brother would practice all day with them and they didn’t get to go to prom because they were always training and they’re going to be too old in four years and they dedicated their performance to their grandmother and…
Don’t even get us started on the scoring of figure skating.
Finally, the Olympics are on.
