Sarah Taylor recently went to an event at The Bay hosted by Rachel Roy to catch up with the stunning fashion designer. For those of you who don’t know, here’s a little background on Rachel Roy. Roy started as an intern at Rocawear where she met her future husband Damon Dash. Roy became creative director of women’s and children’s divisions at Rocawear, and in 2005 she started her own line of clothing called Rachel Roy. She now has three clothing lines and two children.
Here she talks to Sarah about what it was like growing up, and now living her dream as a fashion designer.
On her childhood:
I was the girl that couldn’t afford the fashion that I wanted but I still adored Vogue magazine from a very young age. I’ve saved all of mine that I ever bought because it was something that I could afford. I could afford a magazine. I grew up in northern California and recently I had my mom ship them all to me and it was well worth it because it was so inspiring.
On her dream of becoming a designer:
I was that girl that wanted what I saw in the magazines but I couldn’t afford it so for me to work in the designer field with beautiful fabrics and the richest embellishments is a dream come true. And then to be able to take what I can and create fun pieces and be inspired by those girls that I used to be and to provide them fashion-forward pieces is a dream come true as well.
Her advice for aspiring designers:
I think what you should do is pick something that you truly love. And you have to be honest with yourself instead of being a designer or a model. Those are kind of the quintessential jobs that you think of when you think of fashion but there are so many jobs available in fashion from marketing to PR to stylist to shoppers. Get your foot in the door somehow and if no one gives you the opportunity, go start your own company. You can do that online for free.
