RapCity A.M. News Round Up: Lil Wayne leads BET Hip-Hop Awards noms

September 8th, 2011

Having learned this week that his latest album Tha Carter IV not only topped the Billboard album charts, but sold nearly one million in doing so, Lil Wayne has just received 18 nominations for the 2011 BET Hip-Hop Awards. That’s some serious praise, considering the second most nominations of nine – a tie between Kanye West and Wiz Khalifa – is half of Weezy’s total. Some of the categories he finds himself nominated include Best Live Performer, Lyricist of the Year, MVP of the Year, Track of the Year, Best Club Banger and Viewers’ Choice (“6 Foot, 7 Foot”), Best Featured Verse (“Motivation” by Kelly Rowland) and Hustler of the Year. Speaking of Weezy and his chart-topping ways, his label boss and Cash Money cohort Birdman has been accused of assisting Wayne in reaching that impressive number of 964,000 albums sold. Speaking with Shade 45′s Sway in the Morning radio show, Birdman said, “Nah, man, that really don’t make no sense. Why would we do that? I press and distribute ‘em. Ain’t no need for me to buy ‘em. That’s hustling backwards; we ain’t in it for that. I ain’t ever been a part of that type of scheme to be buyin’ records. We don’t do that, homie. We be working too hard to be—that don’t go with what we do. We truly what we do. We’re real about what we do, we work hard every day at it, and we work for the people. That’s what we do music for: for people. And we appreciate the love they give us back. But no such thing as me buying no CDs. I wouldn’t even play it like that.” (Via MTV)

The 14th annual Red Bull Music Academy is set to happen in Madrid, Spain this fall, but it’s the events happening in New York that will likely turn most heads. Among the names involved in hosting workshops and performing include Mobb Deep (September 25th), Slick Rick (September 27th), Wu-Tang Clan (September 28th), Black Moon (September 29th), and The Dipset Crew/Diplomats (September 30th). Kreayshawn’s partner in crime, V-Nasty is currently working in the studio with Gucci Mane. The White Girl Mob member tweeted about the collaboration and linked to a photo of the two, “swaggin on u bitches an mobbin on u suckas,” she wrote. (Via Complex)
