Influential hip-hop MC Guru (real name Keith Elam) passed away yesterday (April 19th) after a long battle with cancer. He was 43.
The voice behind Gang Starr, his seminal group with DJ Premier, and Jazzmatazz, his highly influential hip-hop/jazz fusion project, had been in a coma since March after he underwent surgery for cardiac arrest.
The last few years saw Guru working with producer/MC Solar, who issued both his own statement and a letter Guru wrote before his death.
In the letter, Guru noted that it would be his partner Solar who will maintain his legacy, and not his longtime collaborator Premier, who Guru explicitly pointed out will not have anything to do with his name likeness, etc.
You can read the letter in full here.
