Recap: Madonna Justified Our Love for Glee!

April 21st, 2010

"Express Yourself" covered by the Ladies of Glee

“You don’t deserve the power of Madonna. You have none of her self confidence, her power over her body, or her sexual magnetism.” Sue Sylvester.

Like a Prayer, 4 Minutes to Save the World, Vogue, For a Girl, Like a Virgin, Open Your Heart/Borderline, Express Yourself, Ray of Light – whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, – Glee was on fire last night!! Fire!! Gi-normous flames!! If you’re not watching Glee, what on earth is wrong with you?

Last night featured not just our fav Madonna songs, but moved plotlines forward too. Unless you want to avoid spoilers, read ahead for a recap, our fav Madonna cover, the best vocals, memorable quotes, and the full versions of some of the best songs from the episode.

The show featured all our fav singing talent picking songs that best describe what they’re going through using the Power of Madonna. Rachel, Emma and Finn decide they are going to take hold of their sexuality and do the deed with Jesse, Will and Santana. Only Finn goes through with it, but he lies about it with Rachel, and she does likewise. Tina and Artie finally get together and share kiss. Mercedes and Kurt join the Cheerios when the feel they aren’t being treated fairly in glee. Jesse leaves rival team Vocal Adrenaline and joins Will’s New Directions.

Santana got her first solo singing parts in “Like a Virgin”, Rachel and Finn performed a mash-up of “Borderline”/“Open Your Heart” and preggy Quinn got to sing and dance in “Express Yourself”. Mercedes and Kurt showed off their cheering skills in “4 Minutes” and the Cheerios did a wicked dance number on stilts to “Ray of Light”.

Best Song of the Episode: “Vogue” + Sue Sylvester
Hands down – Sue’s Vogue. I will never get that image out of my head – the usually mean, violent and conniving coach not only glammed up for the song (and I mean full on glammed up – hair, make-up, dresses, body, everything was different!) but showed of her singing chops by taking on one of the most iconic Madonna songs ever. And she also managed to sneak in the line “Will. Schuster. I. Hate. You.”

Best Group Song: “Like a Prayer”
Just hearing Rachel sing those opening notes – I swear a shiver went down my spine! It was so unbelievably beautiful! The actual track is longer than what they showed in the episode, so if you catch it on YouTube or on the soundtrack, you’ll get to hear all the voices – Finn’s leading voice, Kurt’s falsetto, and Mercedes powerhouse vocals.

Best Original Take on Madonna: “What It Feels Like, For a Girl”When I heard this song was going to be sung, I just figured it would be the girls lecturing the guys – But whoa! Hold on! All the guys decided to suck it up and sang a song that got them to think about how they treat the opposite sex.

Best Sum Up of Madonna: Will Schuster
“Culturally, Madonna’s legacy transcends her music because by and large the subtexts of her songs are about being strong, independent and confident no matter what your sex. But more than anything, Madonna’s musical message is about equality and that is something you guys need to work on.”

Best Lines:
Kurt: “Mercedes is black, I’m gay. We make culture.”
Sue: “Do you not understand the blackmail process and how it works.?”
Emma: “Lindsay Lohan looks like something out of Lord of the Rings.
Puck: “I am not down with this. I like being a dude..”
Santana: “I meant for me. It’s win-win for me.
Jesse: “Just come out so we can talk. Or sing about it.”
