Record Store Day Approacheth!

April 15th, 2009

What a good excuse to get out of the house this weekend! The third annual Record Store Day is coming this Saturday, April 18th. It’s like the best pseudo-holiday you’ve never heard of: a chance to “celebrate the art of music” and independent music stores. With free stuff. And free performances by some great bands.

Apparently everyone is getting in on this thing, (even your annoying little brother). Stores in at least 17 different countries are staging events on RSD, which is held on the third Saturday in April. In Canada 57 stores are participating! The event is getting a lot of artist support, too. Last year Metallica rocked out at a store in San Francisco. THIS year Queen‘s Brian May is giving away a guitar in support of the event, and Disturbed are doing an in-store performance in Portland, Maine.

Lots of artists have spoken out in support of the independent record store. Everyone from Jack White to John Mellencamp, Metric to George Pettit (of Alexisonfire), and Paul Wall to Paul McCartney has commented on how they think actual music stores are a vital part of our society.

From what I read, guitar-master Joe Satriani summed up the issues best. Here’s what he had to say on the topic:
“Independent record stores are a vital source of the ever-changing cool. They respond to the street faster than the chains can. [...] Musical trends are confirmed at the local independent record store, by you and me. Hanging out, listening to something you’ve never heard before, being enlightened by the staff, getting into something new, finding that old recording you’ve been searching for, having your local band’s newest offering stocked right next to major label stuff, it all happens at the local indie shop. Why would we want to do away with all that?”

True say. So listen, here’s a little advice from me to you: get OUT there on Saturday!

As if that’s not enough, here are a few of the exciting performances happening at Canadian stores:

Backstreet Records (Fredericton): performers TBA.
Criminal Records (Toronto): performances by Rock Plaza Central, and Great Bloomers
Red Cat Records (Vancouver): performances by Buffaloswans, The Fits, Veda Hille.
Sonic Boom (Toronto): performances by Hooded Fang, Slim Twig, Gentleman Reg.
Sunrise Records (Scarborough): performances by Josh Reichmann, Blackie Jackett Jr., KO.
