Vinyl records may be considered retro, but Vancouver-based Tania Hennessy has given them a second life thanks to her eye-catching jewelry line Aroha Silhouettes. The New Zealand native uses bold designs (including some that make the 2-dimensional material look 3-D) to create affordable and eye-catching necklaces and earrings. Best of all, they’re eco-friendly and let the wearer celebrate music and jewelry together. Forget about recycling, Tania talks to us about musical “upcycling.”
Where do you get the records from?
TANIA: Vinyl records are all around when you’re looking for them. I collect them from swap meets, thrift stores and friends. Most of the records I use are broken and no longer playable, which means I’m saving vinyl record trees! Coloured records are a lot harder to find, but make such beautiful vibrant jewelry.
Why do you like using vinyl to make your jewelry?
The Phantasmal collection has such intricate details and vinyl records were the best material to create them from. I was looking for something that was black, strong, unique and most importantly, a material that could be saved from going to the landfill. Each and every piece is textured and totally one of a kind, containing a small fragment of the music from the original record it was made from.
Have you ever come across a record and thought: “Ah! I can’t bear to cut this up!”
All the time! Recently I was given some records to use and there was a David Bowie album amongst them. There was no way I was cutting that up!

What’s your favourite piece and why?
My favourite piece is the Mini Eclipse Necklace (shown above). I absolutely love the simple flowing lines and the simplicity of the piece while it still pulls a trick on they eye with the illusion that it creates.
How do you think musicians would feel about you giving their art a second life?
I like to think I’m turning one form of art into another while creating something new for people to enjoy. Turning musical art into wearable art and giving it a second life, while upcycling at the same time. I hope the musicians don’t mind!
