Remember Cruel Intentions?

August 22nd, 2008

I feel like you can tell a lot about people based on what music turns them on. Not sexually, just generally. It’s like my distrust of people who don’t like dogs.

That’s why it was a little embarrassing to tell Adam Duritz (lead singer of Counting Crows) that my favourite song of his is also one of his most commercial hits. (See “Colorblind” from the ‘99 film Cruel Intentions). Anyway I saw that look in his eyes. The one you give to those people who complain about the state of music and exclusively buy greatest hits compilation CDs from Best Buy.

It turns out Adam is a sweet, thoughtful man who is also brave. He was very candid about his ongoing battle with mental illness and how it has impacted his music or rather inspired it. Mental illness is still a real issue that is unfortunately partnered with social stigma, and it’s something that is often ridiculed and ignored. Our conversation was enlightening so much so I pulled out all my sad and beautiful 90s Counting Crows records.

This one is still my favourite… check it out.

Keep your eyes on The Loop to watch the interview.

PPS: I recently re-watched the original Cruel Intentions on a rainy evening and it’s wicked … remember Dangerous Liaisons?
