Need to know: An underground supergroup featuring members of Don Caballero, Helmet, Tomahawk and Storm & Stress, Battles formed in 2002 out a desire to make mathematical, technologically-enhanced rock music that could be both challenging and tuneful. After releasing a single and two EPs, the band put out their debut album, Mirrored, on Warp in 2007, which quickly earned the band accolades for their tight, punchy arrangements and free-flowing experimentation. While recording their second album, vocalist/multi-instrumentalist Tyondai Braxton shocked the band when he announced his departure. The band then scrapped the sessions they recorded and began from scratch. Sticking to their winning formula, they opted to bring in a team of disparate guest vocalists: synthpop legend Gary Numan, Blonde Redhead chanteuse Kazu Makino, Kompakt-signed house crooner Matias Aguayo and the feral frontman for Boredoms, Yamantaka Eye.

Via Twitter: Even w/ the departure of MVP Braxton, Battles’ limitless scope & inventiveness are still flawlessly executed & more playful than ever.

Sample: “Ice Cream”

RIYL: Fuck Buttons, Gang Gang Dance, Holy Fuck, TV On the Radio
