Cass McCombs
Wit’s End
(Domino)
A-
Need to know: Once labeled “unobtrusively brilliant” by John Peel, California singer-songwriter Cass McCombs has spent the last decade traversing across the world for each of his six records. Known as an enigma, even his own label boss, Kris Gillespie admits, “I won’t pretend that I’ll ever fully understand Cass.” Album number five, Wit’s End, is allegedly biographical, which for such a private songwriter means either he’s making it all up or we’re getting a real treat here.
Via Twitter: Cass digs deeper on this sombre affair, bordering on a soft rock direction that not only suits him, but trumps everything he’s done so far.
Sample: “County Line”
RIYL: Kurt Vile, Leonard Cohen, Destroyer, Bill Callahan
