Best. Game. Ever.
Guitar Hero II is one of those rare “killer apps”, meaning the game justifies the purchase of an Xbox 360 just to play it. There’s not a lot of games worth that kind of investment, but this is one of them.
Guitar Hero II has been out for a while already for Playstation 2. So what’s different about the Xbox 360 version? Well, the first thing you’ll notice is the controller. The XBox 360 controller is the Flying V guitar that you can play in the game. The controller doesn’t just look different though, it feels different from the Playstation 2 one. It’s sturdier, tougher- it feels less likely to break it and considering extra controllers don’t come cheap, that’s a gooood thing. There’s also this mysterious port on the controller that doesn’t seem to have any purpose. Microsoft hints it’s for some future expansion and the blogosphere is guessing that’s an effect pedal. How f’in cool would that be?!
Second big difference you’re going to notice are the songs. There are some of the same songs in the Xbox 360 version, but there are some great new additions from Toadies, Pearl Jam, Aerosmith and more.
But the best thing about the Xbox 360 edition of Guitar Hero II is its integration with Xbox Live. You can connect to Live and play with other players online AND download new songs! Yep, if you get sick of the songs the game shipped with, you can purchase new packs, extending the life of this version well beyond the PS2 one.
The Guitar Hero series is also the type of game that my non-gaming friends will actually play with me and enjoy. And, as a hard-core gamer, I get limitless entertainment from it. So, it’s fun for a larger audience than a lot of games. And by fun, I mean craploads of awesomeness.
Final Verdict: 5/5 ![]()
