Toro y Moi
Underneath The Pine
(Carpark)
A
Need to know: Last year Chaz Bundick found his music under the name Toro y Moi to fall under the much-hyped chillwave tag, along with the likes of Washed Out, Neon Indian and Small Black. During promo for his debut album, Causers of This, Bundick did admit that his follow-up would be a very different album. But as Underneath The Pine reveals, he failed to warn us that it would be a complete reinvention.
Via Twitter: ToroyMoi leaves chillwave out in the cold on album#2 for a warm hug of retro nods 2 soft pop, blissed funk & psych that defies pastiche.
Sample: “New Beat”
RIYL: Beach Boys’ Surf’s Up, Stevie Wonder’s Innervisions, mid-period Stereolab, Caribou
