Rihanna is no stranger to pushing the envelope. She titled her last album Rated R and released the single S & M. To think that the singer can still shock audiences may seem like a bit of a surprise, but with today’s release for We Found Love, Rihanna has again pushed the boundary. But this time she has done it successfully.
Shot in Northern Ireland by S & M, Hard and Rude Boy director Melina Matsoukas, the video is already being compared to drug-riddled movies Requiem For a Dream and Trainspotting, and in my opinion deserves a heavy handed comparison to England’s Skins. The video shows Rihanna in an intense relationship with a Chris Brown look-a-like that turns volatile when the two begin taking drugs and drinking together. The Chris Brown likeness even includes a fight scene in a car where model/boxer Dudley O’ Shaughnessy, who plays the boyfriend character, gets physical with Rihanna. This seems a little more than reminiscent of the infamous February 2009 event that included Brown beating his then-girlfriend Rihanna in his car and leaving her on the side of the road after a party.
The video doesn’t tip toe around scenes with drug use, drinking or violence and graphically shows how a relationship that includes substance abuse can turn from love to volatile quickly. Hopefully parents and censor groups will find some peace of mind when Rihanna is shown leaving her abusive boyfriend at the end of the video.
Check out the video for We Found Love below and let us know what you think! Too graphic or a great video?
