‘Role Models’ Worth Looking Up To

Role Models, the Judd Apatow-ish comedy that has nothing to do with Judd Apatow, hits theatres today – and is it ever funny.

The film follows sad-sacks Danny (Paul Rudd, who also co-wrote) and Wheeler (Seann William Scott) as two energy drink promoters who, after a very bad day, get court appointed to 150 hours of community service at Sturdy Wings, a charitable organization which matches adult volunteers with children who need mentoring. The only problem is that Danny and Wheeler are crass, uncaring, foul-mouthed and miserable. As are their “Littles”, the two kids they are matched up with. And so is Gayle Sweeny (Jane Lynch), the head of Sturdy Wings who has a shady past of having cocaine for breakfast and lunch and dinner.

Needless to say, this is not a family film, yet somehow, it manages to be ridiculously cute. Even Rudd has said, “It’s like a kids’ movie… with a ton of bad language.” And the bad language is non-stop – thanks in part to Wheeler’s “Little”, Ronnie, a 10-year old with the mouth of a sailor and the wit of a comedic veteran; everything that comes out of his mouth is destined to end up on a tasteless t-shirt or bumper sticker. Speaking of comedic veterans, the amazing Jane Lynch (Best In Show, Talladega Nights) successfully steals every scene she is in; someone needs to get this lady her own show or franchise or something. Pronto.

All in all, this movie has heart, humour, will introduce many to the bizarre world of LARPing (Live Action Role Playing), and will satisfy anyone who has ever wanted to lash out at a Starbucks employee due to the stupid naming of their drink sizes.

Raunchy, ridiculous and Rudd = pretty much awesome.
