Last week I had the pleasure of attending the taping of Rufus Wainwright: Live At The Rehearsal Hall. What a treat! Rufus’ music, though not necessarily a popular or mainstream sound – is unique and beautiful.
Over the top? At times perhaps, but that is part of his charm. Flamboyant, witty and immeasurably talented – he has been establishing himself for years as one of our generation’s most well respected gems.
I have to admit that as a long-time fan, I’ve been disappointed lately that he’s been avoiding most (if not all) of his phenomenal older material. Each time I’ve see him live recently, I hope to hear “Foolish Love”, “Millbrook”, “Cigarettes and Chocolate Milk” and a rainbow (ha!) of other tunes. It seems he’s weary of his self-described ‘greatest possible hits’ and is steadfastly sticking to material from his latest album “Release The Stars”. It’s probably for the best, since I wasn’t especially won over by the album on my first couple listens. It seemed a little too ambitious – too much going on. Sometimes more instruments and vocalists do not ‘a better album make’.
I am relieved to admit that seeing the new material performed live really sold me on it. Rufus has a unique and multi-talented band he’s been carting around with him. They are usually seen wearing mismatched striped suits with gaudy broaches – showcasing their individual talent by switching instruments enough times to satisfy an Arcade Fire fan! Their performances make it very apparent how work goes into their arrangements.
A glittery seven piece band – yet you can’t take your eyes and ears off Rufus or his beautiful voice. To me, he is the musical equivalent to comfort food.
If you can handle the charm, talent and garish outfits, make sure you check out the show on Bravo! October 2 @ 10pm ET and 1am ET and again on October 6 @ 8pm ET.
