First Morrissey threatened to quit making music and now Ryan Adams has left the band he’s fronted since 2004, The Cardinals, and has hinted to quitting music entirely (at least for now). Ryan fronted Whiskeytown and then ventured into the world of solo releases for a few years before forming The Cardinals.

In a post on his official blog Cardinology (currently down), Adams hinted at taking a step back from music altogether, saying that he has “a whole lot of living and learning to do” instead and referred to touring as a ’soul destroying’ venture. I don’t blame him for blasting the touring circuit - personally I don’t know how most bands do it. I’ve talked to many artists who talk about touring the shit out of their albums, sometimes for record-breaking lengths of time, and it seems EXHAUSTING. There’s the issue of being in close proximity to the same people all the time, the repetition, never really feeling at ‘home’ and having your comforts with you, not to mention just the general strain of travelling and being on the road away from your friends and family.

Plus he’s got a book coming out on April 1, Infinity Blues.

“Maybe we will play again sometime and maybe I will work my way back into some kind of music situation but this is the time for me to step back now,” he wrote.

His last tour stop with The Cardinals is on March 20 in Atlanta, Georgia. Earlier, the band finished up a North American tour opening for Oasis - Noel Gallagher personally selected them to do the job.
