I think my affection for all (most) things ridiculous is a fine explanation for my current obsession with nouveau SNL. Kristin Wiig is so ridiculous that I want to be her bestie. Andy Samberg? Ridiculous. Will Forte? Ridiculous. Ridiculous humour is the new fart joke. (I was never one for fart jokes, which explains why Saturday’s “fart face” sketch bombed hard.. or maybe cause it was just bad). Oh look, I’m rambling.
Of course, SNL has a long history of ridiculousness (first few seasons are full of amazing examples, my favourite of all time being the Land Shark), but it’s really nice to see them implementing more focused ridiculousness these days (i.e. tighter sketches). Oh, of course SNL still has its fair share of garbage, but this season has produced at least 2-3 solid, laugh-out-loud-and-share-with-your-friends sketches per episode (a new record! kidding. sort of.)
What am I getting at? Marky Mark, that’s what. Two weeks ago Andy Samberg did a spot-on Mark Wahlberg impression in this coup de ridiculoux, which had me crying. It makes no sense. It’s wonderful. (Warning: if you are not easily amused, you may not find this funny)
Later, Mark Wahlberg was quoted saying that he wishes the sketch was funnier, and he appeared on Jimmy Kimmel, unsmiling, to say that he wants to ‘crack’ Samberg’s ‘big f**king nose’. So what was the deal with that, huh? Was he really that angry about it, is he a deadpan expert or was the Kimmel appearance an elaborate set-up for THIS????
Amazing.
Saturday’s appearance was ripe with buzzworthy moments (Sarah Palin, anyone?) but this was by far my favourite. It proves that Marky Mark has the ability to laugh at himself (or at least realize the benefit for his just-opened movie Max Payne), it proves that SNL still has the ability to be funny and relevant, and it proves that I need to find me a Boston-accented boyfriend, stat.

Wendy these were great! I can watch both of these over and over again. I found the Sarah Palin rap to be just as funny. Classic pieces.
