Scott Pilgrim vs. The World

February 9th, 2009

scottpilgrimvolume5coverSo the fifth installment of Scott Pilgrim came out on Wednesday with a wicked hot pink and yellow shiny foil cover. If you haven’t heard about the Scott Pilgrim series yet, you’re about to, because Shaun of the Dead director Edgar Wright is making it into a movie! If Wright’s film is anything like the books, we’re in for a killer good time.

But first, let’s talk about the original. Scott Pilgrim is Bryan Lee O’Malley’s six-issue graphic novel miniseries about stylish twentysomething hipsters livin’ and lovin’ in downtown Toronto. The title character, Scott, is a lazy bass player in an indie band who finds himself in a strange manga-esque predicament - he must battle the seven evil ex-boyfriends of his mysterious American ninja-girlfriend in order to win her love. The sixth and final issue of SP has yet to be released, but so far Scott has gained lives, points and levels (video-game styles!) kicking some serious villain ass. Despite his surprisingly badass fighting skills, Scott is awkward, geeky and totally adorable.

So who better to play him in the Universal picture than Michael Cera from Juno?

In Wright’s Scott Pilgrim vs. The World film, Cera will costar with sexy “scream queen” Mary Elizabeth Winstead, who will play Ramona. The cast will also include Keiran Culkin as Scott’s witty gay roomie, Brie Larson as Scott’s saucy ex, and some assorted square-jawed babes from superhero movies as Ramona’s evil exes (most notably Chris Evans and Brandon Routh.)

If you live in Toronto, you can put your indie-star sighting goggles on soon, because the crew of Scott Pilgrim will be filming downtown starting in April. If not, you’ll just have to check out them wicked hipsters on the big screen in 2010!
