The Secret Life of the American Teenager‘s Shailene Woodley just landed the coveted role of Hazel Grace Lancaster in The Fault in Our Stars. The film is based on the John Green novel that was named both Time and Entertainment Weekly’s Best Fiction of 2012.
In an exclusive interview with Entertainment Weekly, the film’s director Josh Boone reveals that the 21-year-old starlet beat over 250 actresses for the part. “I saw some stunning auditions by today’s finest young actresses,” says Boone. “It wasn’t until Shailene stepped in front of the camera that I truly saw Hazel for the first time.”
The Fault in Our Stars centers on two teenagers, Gus and Hazel, who fall in love after meeting in the most unlikely setting of a cancer support group. Boone says he is excited for audiences to see Woodley as Hazel. “It was like lightning striking,” says Boone about her audition. “I can’t wait for the rest of the world to see what I have.”
John Green also spoke to the magazine about the casting. “Watching her audition, I felt like Hazel Grace Lancaster was talking to me,” says Green. “It was eerie and very exciting.”
Woodley’s career is on fire. She made Much.com’s list of 5 Stars to watch in 2013 for a reason. With The Spectatcular Now and White Bird in a Blizzard coming out this year, Woodley has a chance to remind audiences why she was the breakout star of Alexander Payne’s The Descendants.
If work in independent films with respected directors isn’t enough, Woodley is also set to conquer the box office with two blockbuster films. She has the lead in the young adult franchise, Divergent and is Mary Jane Watson in The Amazing Spider-Man 2.
It’s quite exciting to see the TV star transition into film, now that her show is ending on its fifth season. This latest casting news only further solidifies Woodley’s path to movie stardom.
