She’s Out of My League: A Review!

March 18th, 2010

Hey baby.

Have you and your friends ever “rated” yourselves? What did you come out as? A four? A seven? A hard ten? In She’s Out of My League, it’s all about the numbers. A “five” named Kirk (Jay Baruchel) finds himself in a relationship with a “hard ten”, named Molly (Alice Eve). I decided to check out the flick this weekend, so read what I have to say about this one after the jump!

This movie has a great cast, despite the fact they’re all pretty unknown. Yes, Montreal-born Jay Baruchel used to be on Popular Mechanics For Kids, though. Let’s not forget that, ok? He did an amazing job of playing the goofy nerdy TSA officer, and his counterpart Alice Eve played an amazing too-good-to-be-true girl. The pair together were almost too funny to bear at some parts, especially the awkward ones. The movie also made a point to add your typical crazy ex-girlfriend, disfunctional family, catty best friend to the girl, and shameless co-workers. Without them, the movie would have fallen flat.

The humor in this movie was pretty consistent. It was definitely uncomfortable, but it stayed away from the slapstick. There were quite a few scenes that had me cringing in my seat, just because it was just so awkwardly funny, and there were some parts when I just plain LOLed. Do me a favor and please, see this one with friends, and NOT your family. Hey, it’s rated 14A for a reason.

Plot wise, She’s Out of My League was definitely lacking. Although boy loses girl a couple of times, it’s your average boy-meets-girl. It was also pretty thin in the sense that there were lots of filler scenes that weren’t really necessary or funny. It seemed to drag out, and I would have been perfectly content if they would have cut the running time down to 80 minutes, instead of 104 minutes.

What this movie lacked in plot, it made up for in humor. And what it lacked in good looking guys, it made up for in beautiful girls. I’d recommend this one to anyone who enjoys pointless, idiotic and completely innapropriate jokes. Since the whole movie is based on ratings, I think I’ll use Kirk & Molly’s ratings to predict my own rating. 5 + 10 = 15, which is an average of 7.5/10. Sound about right? Disagree?
