Simon Cowell has teamed up with YouTube to launch The You Generation, an online talent competition that officially starts today. The reality show veteran, who has helped discover music stars like Kelly Clarkson and Olly Murs on American Idol and The X Factor UK, is hoping to parlay his television success to the Internet.

“Our mission is to discover the world’s next big YouTube stars and showcase their amazing and unique talents on The You Generation channel,” said the joint statement released by YouTube and Cowell’s company, Syco Entertainment.

The You Generation is a competition for all talents, not just aspiring singers. So if you want to be a beauty entrepreneur like Michelle Phan, you can submit a video showcasing your skills as a make-up artist.

Every fortnight, a new contest will be held to find a particular talent. Submissions will be judged by Syco executives and from experts in that field. Each winner will not only be rewarded with cash, but will also become a finalist for a grand prize that has yet to be revealed.

One Direction, who were discovered on The X Factor UK back in 2010, will be participating in today’s live online launch which starts at 2pm EST.

Cowell made a wise business decision by taking advantage of social media’s growing prominence. YouTube arguably rivals television as a popular source of entertainment in the world today.

YouTube is also a medium for undiscovered talent to use the exposure they gain to help launch their careers. Teen idol Justin Bieber is one of the most famous examples of this.

The You Generation is a good concept, but whether it will actually discover a talent that finds international success, remains to be seen.

What are your thoughts on this new talent search? Do you think you’ll apply?
