Britt Daniel: I’m gonna tear you a new one!!
Looks like someone’s got a really brutal case of the copycats.
I was watching this new show called The Main on Food Network this week, mostly because I think chef Anthony Sedlak is a supercutie, and I’ve been trying to figure out what kind of hybrid accent he has (Boston? Canadian? Prairies? His bio says he’s from Vancouver, so who knows).
Anyway, as I tucked into the show I noticed an immediate adoration for the show’s theme song, and thought to myself, wow, since when does the Food Network get cool indie bands from Austin, Texas to lend their music to TV show theme songs?? Namely, how cool is it that Spoon let FoodTV use I Turn My Camera On for the intro? I freaking love that song!
But no. As soon as the vocals kick in, I realized it was NOT Spoon, but someone else. The show’s credits revealed that the song is an ‘original production’ by a company called Lenz Entertainment.
Please listen to both songs and tell me that The Main’s theme song isn’t a note for note, break for break, blatant copy of 2004’s I Turn My Camera On? Spoon’s fan message boards certainly agree. Britt Daniel’s gonna be hella pissed when he finds out about this!
I wish I could splice the two or really put them side by side, but Food Network’s player is a little tricky.

Supercutie, eh? I just swallowed some of my own vomit.
How ironic that a cooking show would bite a band called Spoon
I often wonder about his accent too!! Well his bio says he’s from prince george BC….which would not give him that accent as I live not to far from PG and know this first hand. However he did spend some time over in England, so Im wondering if his accent is a weird mash up of canadian/english….it almost sounds scottish to me…but who knows where his parents are from which could have influenced the accent as well.
I had the exact same thoughts! I love Anthony Sedlak and his show and the whole reason I tuned in the first time was because Spoon was playing! The show always makes me want to listen to “I Turn My Camera On” too.
And here’s an interview from tv guide that explains his accent. It was bothering me so much trying to figure out what it was!!
TVG: OK, finally, I’ve looked all over the Internet but couldn’t find it anywhere. You grew up in North Vancouver but I’m not gonna lie. Your accent is very distinct. Where’s it from?
AS: [Laughs.] I worked in London for a couple of years. When I worked there, I worked under a French chef who had lived in England for 10 years so his accent was [wacky]. And I worked with a lot of Australians, and a lot of Irish, and a lot of Welsh. A few Brazilians, a couple Americans.
Two years isn’t a long time in England, but when you’re there 18 hours a day, right beside these people, it’s like doing double time. All of our accents wore off on each other and we all started talking like each other, so that’s where it came from.
TVG: So before you went to London, you spoke —
AS: — just like any other Canadian, yeah. And to be honest, by no means do I try at all to do it. But I find that I talk like that. It comes out when I’m really into something.

Agreed! The lyrics in the theme song don’t fit… it’s like they took Spoon’s music, removed the vocals and spliced in their lyrics.
That can’t be good… I smell a lawsuit. lol
