Stompin’ Tom Connors passes away

Canadian country musician Stompin’ Tom Connors has passed away at the age of 77. Connors’ spokesperson announced the singer’s death yesterday, saying that the New Brunswick native passed away from ‘natural causes’.

Nicknamed for his signature foot stomping to keep rhythm while performing, Connors was a champion of Canadian music, writing almost exclusively about his home country and becoming famous declining six JUNO Awards over his career, feeling that the Canadian music awards show had become ‘too Americanized’. Connors most well-known song, The Hockey Song, is often played during NHL games in Canada and the US.

Connors recently wrote a letter to his fans, with wishes that his words be released upon his death.

Hello friends, I want all my fans, past, present, or future, to know that without you, there would have not been any Stompin’ Tom.

It was a long hard bumpy road, but this great country kept me inspired with its beauty, character, and spirit, driving me to keep marching on and devoted to sing about its people and places that make Canada the greatest country in the world.

I must now pass the torch, to all of you, to help keep the Maple Leaf flying high, and be the Patriot Canada needs now and in the future.

I humbly thank you all, one last time, for allowing me in your homes, I hope I continue to bring a little bit of cheer into your lives from the work I have done.

A celebration of life is being held at the Peterborough Memorial Centre on Wednesday, March 13 in Peterborough and will be open to the public.
