Straight From Windsor

August 8th, 2006

This weekend I, at a family function, I met a man named George who owns Riverside Music Shop in Windsor Ontario. Windsor’s the city that’s right across the river from Detroit (one of the most musical Cities in North America). Now there are a lot of standards and rules that apply to what type of musical content that’s broadcast in Canada. There has to be certain percentage of Canadian music on all the airwaves and television. Since Windsor is so close to Detroit, and Detroit has such a thriving music scene, a lot of the music that Windsor hears on the radio is different from what we receive in other parts of Canada. It’s mostly consists of Detroit radio stations. There are common bands that I quite surprised that George hadn’t heard of like the recently separated Death From Above 1979. This guy knows his stuff too. I mean he owns a music store!

So not only does Windsor’s pop music scene seem to resemble nothing familiar to us in Canada, but like every other Canadian, and North American city, Windsor has it’s own thriving music scene. I was fortunate enough to run into George this weekend, where he gave me Pat Robitaille’s CD. This guy’s not bad at all, especially for a 20 year old. His music isn’t my cup of tea, but I enjoy a cup of coffee once and a while. His music is reminiscent of maybe Dallas Green and Sam Roberts to compare him to an artist you might find on our charts. Give him a listen and let us know what you think.

That’s my word. Have a great ‘effin day.
