Summer Wrap: Top 5 summer flicks

August 21st, 2012

Summer is all about going out and enjoying the sun, but the one exception we make every year are the amazingly air-conditioned movie theatres offering up some of the season’s biggest flicks. Here, we count down the top five summer flicks of 2012!

5. Moonrise Kingdom
Indie film buffs were drooling in anticipation for Wes Anderson’s latest film, Moonrise Kingdom, and it did not disappoint. This quirky love story between two 12-year-olds immediately won over our hearts and the all-star cast of Bill Murray, Frances McDormand and Tilda Swinton was just a sweet bonus to it all. For those who are familiar with Anderson’s work, Moonrise Kingdom sticks within the filmmaker’s signature style of aesthetics, but breathes new life into the story with an off-kilter sense of humour, impeccable acting and a storybook feel that simultaneously felt nostalgic and new.

4. Brave
Brave definitely wins for the best animated film of the summer (sorry, Ice Age and Madagascar). This film not only screamed “GIRL POWER” but it was also a funny and endearing tale that’s definitely worthy of becoming a Disney classic.

3. Magic Mike
Channing Tatum as a male stripper – that is all. I don’t believe we need to go into any more detail, but we’ll admit that Tatum aside, the film was actually really good. Both entertaining and well-received by critics, it’s no wonder why a second Magic Mike film is already in the works.

2. The Amazing Spider-Man
You know what The Amazing Spider-Man had that its competitor The Dark Knight Rises doesn’t? The hottest celeb couple off-screen on our screens! It-couple Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone not only sizzle in real life, but thanks to their on-screen chemistry, The Amazing Spider-Man successfully translates as both a compelling love story and a kickass summer blockbuster. We hear that there might be more films in the works right now so here’s hoping for some more Spider-Man action in future summers!

1. The Dark Knight Rises
Hands down, The Dark Knight Rises was the biggest film of the summer. The most anticipated film not only this summer, but this year, The Dark Knight Rises broke box office records and lived up to all the hype. Let’s admit it – we totally saw it multiple times in the theatre and not just because we’re fans of air conditioning; we were definitely bigger fans of Christopher Nolan, Christian Bale, Anne Hathaway, and everyone involved in one of the year’s biggest films. Oscar-worthy…??
