What do you get when you mash up hipsters, pigs, and fighter planes together? You get Billy Talent’s latest video for Surprise Surprise which tells the story of the band given the responsibility to smoke out the enemy Pigs. Now, I’m not too sure why they end up kamikaze’ing themselves to protest the existence of hipsters but the lyrics to the song sound loud and clear: “Oh you upper class daughters, and working class sons/ It’s hard to save a dollar the way the world runs/ We got a counterculture you can buy of a shelf/ If you’re losing your identity to somebody else”. Profound? Yes. New? Not really. We’ve been dealing with the pitfalls of consumerism for a good chunk of modern history and so Billy Talent is just reiterating a very important point: you can’t buy cool but we gotta be weary of the people who buy into it.
