Susan Boyle Album Drops This Tuesday

November 20th, 2009

Eeeyayyyyy

What ever happened to William Hung? After butchering Ricky Martin’s “She Bangs” in the American Idol auditions, Hung became the most viral overnight celebrity in history. Okay, that’s not a fact, but it seemed like it at the time. So was anyone really surprised when Britain’s Got Talent answered back with Susan Boyle?

Earlier this year, 47-year old contestant Boyle stunned all those who sneered at her appearance during the audition. Her performance of “I Dreamed a Dream” from Les Miserables left everyone watching in a state of shock.

Now, months later, the Scottish singer is finally releasing her first album, I Dreamed A Dream, hitting stores in North America this Tuesday, November 24. Unfortunately, the album has no original songs.
Her covers will include The Rolling Stones’ “Wild Horses”, “Memory” from the musical Cats, “Cry Me a River”, which has 100 million hits on Youtube and of course, “Amazing Grace”.

But I have to wonder, while she does have a great singing voice, is she really that special? The performance was surely not a reason to start crying (I’m lookin’ at you, Amanda Holden). In my opinion, her superstardom and global attention is solely based on the juxtaposition between her looks and her voice. Ever since April she has had prolonged media interest, but is it for the right reasons? Is she really capable of having a sustained music career? Last I heard, she’s already had a breakdown due to her newfound fame. Now, don’t get me wrong. I’m not a Susan Boyle hater. I am concerned for her; she seems like a very kind old lady. Honestly, it would be too sad if she thought everyone adored her when really they were just having a laugh at her expense.

Surprisingly, for three months, I Dreamed A Dream has been Amazon’s best-selling album in HISTORY, and that’s just in pre-sales! My mind is exploding with questions! Do you think it will hit the Billboard Top 40? Are you planning on buying it? Will it only be moms that will buy it for serious listening purposes? Do you think she is likely to become the next William Hung? Are Boyle’s 15 minutes over?

  1. Sounds like you need to listen to some of Susan’s songs (i.e. Wild Horses, Cry Me a River, etc.) If you did that; I don’t think you’d need to ask nearly as many questions. Might have been nice if you would have done that before you wrote the article, however.

  2. Wow. Do I think it will hit the top 40? You were kidding with this right? I seriously can’t tell if you were kidding or not. I mean, it’s destined (very likely) for either #1 or #2 according to just about every expert out there.

William Hung? Huh? The guy can’t sing a note. Are you saying Susan Boyle can’t sing? Not getting the comparison.

“A nice old lady.” Again, huh? Nice old ladies are 47??? What?!

I’m not a Mom, but I’ve preordered the CD. If you go to twitter, you’ll see her fans seem to range from teens to elderly, which is how she’s been able to become the most preordered singer EVER IN THE WORLD.

Oh… there is an original song on the CD called “Who I was Born to Be” and she’s recording a song that’s been sung before but never recorded (Proud).

    thanks.

  3. I like Susan’s music for her voice, not her story. She’s not old, she’s 48. She didn’t have a breakdown, she was in a clinic for 4 days due to exhaustion because of 7 weeks of brutal press, which obviously is never going to stop, and then you wonder why she got sick!
Is her voice that special? Yes, I do believe that it is, and so do millions of people.
Beating the all time record at Amazon, globally, for pre-orders is one hell of a 15 minutes, wouldn’t you say?

  4. “it would be too sad if she thought everyone adored her when really they were just having a laugh at her expense.”

An expensive laugh! Top record for pre-recorded album! Susan’s voice is already golden, so is she. Pity she still has bullies like you poking fun. Her fans will make sure she has a very long and successful career. No doubt you will find that a bitter pill to swallow. Good. I think the laugh is on you.

  5. I received my three copy’s of Susan’s Album this morning from Amazon!!

I’m writing this review as I listen to each track….

    “Wild Horses” is hauntingly beautiful……..

“I Dreamed a Dream” is FANTASTIC! more mellow at the start, lots of guitar, with a different arrangement, building into a full orchestration, when she belts it out! As the music got more dramatic the tears flowed as it brings back the memory of her very first appearance on BGT! Truly Magical!

“Cry Me A River” wonderful song, again touchingly sung, convinced that Susan could do a Blues/Jazz album!

“How Great Though Art” Susan sings this with an angelic voice, complete with choir, very moving (as is every track so far!) Her voice is so pure, always knew she could deliver!

“You’ll See” Best version of this song I’ve heard, dramatic orchestraton, & has more meaning with Susan singing it! LOVE IT!

“Daydream Believer” Susan tells a story with this one, her voice really is stunning, & I can’t help but think of Karen Carpenter……….

“Up To The Mountain” Again another moving Gospel Song, complete with choir, you can tell that these songs mean so much to Susan, & that’s why she choose them, it certainly comes across!

“Amazing Grace” I’m in Floods on this one, because this was sung at my Mums Funeral. Susan sings it beautifully, then the choir joins her, at the end she goes solo again, finishing with just her angelic voice………. Beautiful.

“Who I was Born To Be” An original song for Susan, this is the one I had been waiting anxiously to hear, it’s very poignant, “& so, here I am Open arms & ready to stand, I’ve got the world in my hands, & it feels like my turn to fly”…

Yes Susan, it is your turn to fly & we’re all flying with you!!!!

“Proud” The song ends “Someday I’ll make you proud” this could have been to her Mum, I’m sure that her Mum is watching down on her & is real proud, in fact MORE than proud! Susan sings this in an almost “Heart Wrenching” way, that’s difficult to describe……. her voice seems to crack at one point that makes it even more emotive.

“The End Of The World” This is a lovely song, with a very simple arrangement, didn’t impact on me the same as some of the others. Susan sings it beautifully though as she does EVERYTHING she sings!

“Silent Night” A very traditional Christmas carol, beautifully sung, & great arrangement, very angelic sounding (Just like Susan!) the song building with the choir.

There is a dedication from Susan on the sleeve where she thanks everyone, including “The public for their support & encouragement in times when I felt I couldn’t cope”

There is also a picture of Susan with her Mum, with a handwritten caption under it that reads “I would like to dedicate this album to my beloved Mother, to whom I made a promise to “to be someone”………..

It really is a fabulous album, I bought three to support Susan. I’m looking forward to Susan’s appearance on X Factor tomorrow, where I am sure she will win over millions more fans.

    Well done Susan!

  6. You are a very funny person. As you write, I can see your mind bending
trying to grasp the Susan Boyle phenom. Only time will answer all your questions. Enjoy the album.
