arctic-monkeys-review

Touring in support of their third album Humbug, the Arctic Monkeys put on an amazing show last night to a sold-out crowd at the Kool Haus. The Sheffield quartet were on their A game last night which resulted in a show that was one of the best of the year so far.

With the lights dimmed and background music playing, the guys came out to a roaring crowd and opened the show with Dance Little Liar followed by Favourite Worst Nightmare single Brianstorm. With the crowd already in a frenzy after only two songs the guys then played the lead single off Humbug Crying Lighting with some help from the crowd of course.

Mercury Prize short list!

merc2009noms

Once again ladies and gents it is time to place your bets on what album you liked best and see how it stacks up with those who make the big decisions. What I mean to say is the 2009 Mercury Prize short list nominees have been announced! Confused? Let me break it down.

- It’s all about the best albums that have come out over the past year by British or Irish artists
- The short list is made up of the “12 Albums Of the Year” and the winner/numero uno will be announced in September
- It is Europe’s number one arts prize, in terms of coverage and influence
- The music on the album is the only thing they take into account, so it has gotta be a mighty fine piece of music!
- It is kinda like the Polaris Music Prize
- Past winners included Franz Ferdinand, Arctic Monkeys, and Klaxons

So ready to see the top twelve albums?!

News for Monday: Loud Plastic Drumkit Edition

Monday, July 13th, 2009

* The Arctic Monkeys are going on tooouuuuur! Wooooo! I mean, Humbug.

* Queen guitarist Brian May was nearly killed okay fine run over last week-ish — by Roger Taylor’s drum kit. Goes to show you never know who your friends are…

* Can you believe that a whole bunch of European copies of the latest Dinosaur Jr. album have been recalled because they’re too LOUD? What kind of a cruel world is this?

* If this is a joke, it’s way too soon: Michael Jackson’s dad, Joe Jackson, wants MJ’s three kids, who are 7, 11, and 12 years old, to become the new Jackson 3. Seriously?

* In other news, or maybe not so much, Billy Corgan gets pretentious about keeping the Smashing Pumpkins name on his new music.

* Wouldn’t you just love to have a jacket made of 15 old plastic bottles? Radiohead thinks you would…

New Arctic Monkeys Single

Tuesday, July 7th, 2009

arcticmonkeys

Since their 2007 release ‘Favourite Worst Nightmare’ the Arctic Monkeys have been busy touring and recording their new album ‘Humbug’, which is scheduled to be released in August. Today they released the first single, Crying Lightning which has a slightly different sound compared to their previous stuff. Crying Lightning seems to be more of a slower song compared to much of their previous material for the exception of 505 which Crying Lightning reminds me of.

LTTGOE - The View

theview

Hailing from Dundee, Scotland, The View are a quartet that have a similar sound to the Arctic Monkeys & The Fratellis. The guys released their first album back in 2007 with a catchy single Same Jeans that climbed to #3 on the UK charts. Giving the single a listen makes you want to get out of your seat and start dancing. You can hear the similarities between Arctic Monkeys and The Fratellis which is great because I’ve been waiting for something new from the Arctic Monkeys and although this isn’t them it’s close enough.

The View’s MySpace has a few tracks from their second album Which Bitch, which was released earlier this year, including the single Shock Horror. This single also has hints of Glasvegas in it which make it all the better. Check out these guys and let me know what you think.
