Design your own Simpsons character

Tuesday, October 20th, 2009

simpsons

Producers of The Simpsons want you to create a new character for them because they’re “tired, and frankly, too rich to care anymore.”

Entrants must design a character that is a “pithy and funny” yellow human being and include both a catchphrase, plus a brief description.

COLDPLAY @ ROGERS CENTRE
By Liem Vu

Metric’s fantasies may include getting some “Stadium Love” but it’s Coldplay’s reality.
With a lackluster set from opening bands Elbow and Kitty, Daisy, and Lewis, 50,000 fans were sent into a frenzy when Jon Hopkin’s ambient track, ‘Light Through The Veins,’ began to chime. As the prelude to ‘Life in Technicolor’ continued, the Sky…er…Rogers Centre was transformed into a constellation of flickering digital cameras as fans attempted to snap a picture of Chris Martin, Coldplay’s frontman and former-Sexiest Vegetarian.

First Spins: Howling Bells

The arrival of Radio Wars to our First Spins roster is, alright, coming almost five months after it’s UK release date back in March. It takes time to get across the ocean, guys! But if a good thing is worth waiting for, then boy, do we ever have a treat for you!

Coldplay Debut A Swinging Superhero

Tuesday, July 21st, 2009

Fresh off the presses, or whatever makes new videos, we’ve got Coldplay’s latest single from their Viva La Vida album, “Strawberry Swing”. Surprisingly, it has nothing to do with strawberries.

It seems that Coldplay have decided to nix the live performance videos (see: Lost, Clocks, Lovers in Japan, etc.) and have gotten into a trend of producing adorable videos that delight kids of all ages, but are possibly just intended to amuse little Apple and Moses. Puppets, Superheroes, chalk drawings, rescuing princesses… also an evil squirrel. I’m getting some serious Paperbag Princess flashbacks here, dudes.

Possibly Coldplay has become TOO adorable with this latest clip. But I guess anything is better than the low-budget Yellow days. The above is just a trailer-spoiler, but you can see the whole vid at Coldplay’s website. Check it out, and tell us if it’s too twee, or just twee enough!

News for Monday: Brought to you by the letter “M” Edition

Monday, July 6th, 2009

* Never-has-anything-good-to-say Noel Gallagher has insulted Coldplay’s Chris Martin in an Italian newspaper interview for NOT doing drugs. Pretty sure that’s sending the wrong message to the kids.

* We’re pretty sure this one is fake, but here’s an interesting story about a preggers vampire-lovin’ Kristin Stewart.

* Panic! at the Disco break up! Sort of!

* MUSE fans should be aware of The Resistance this September (and it’s track listing, as can be seen on Muse’s twitter)

* Finally, your MJ news recap: the tribute is still going ahead, the estate is still in question, and the record sale numbers are still rising.

Covers covered well

Monday, July 6th, 2009

There is a fine art to covering music. One wants to stay true to the original, while also making the song their own. Then comes the choice of the song. Do you reinvent an old favorite, or take a top 40 hit to another level? When a cover is done wrong it can be disappointing and upsetting, when it’s done right its preeeeeeetttty awesome. Here are some new covers out there that are the more then just okay!

News for Tuesday: Loose Ends Edition

Tuesday, June 16th, 2009

* Twilight’s Ashley Green and Entourage star Adrian Grenier have been spotted getting cozy together. This is only interesting because it means greater potential for more famous vampires! Yesssss.

* Remember the time The White Stripes played a gig on a bus in Winnipeg? Apparently they’re making a movie about that super-random Canadian tour! Win!

* A whole new version of weird: Antony and the Johnsons cover Beyonce’s “Crazy In Love”

* Yusuf Islam, aka Cat Stevens, has invited Coldplay over for tea to forgive them for plagiarizing him (at least that’s what he says).

*POP Montreal has announced their initial line-up for the end-of-September festival. I’m sorry dudes, but it is not looking too exciting, and I’m the sorta person who’d take any half-decent opportunity to road-trip to Montreal.

A Post-Victoria-Day Gift, from Your Pals Coldplay

coldplay1

So while you were sitting around in your backyard this weekend, maybe watching some good old fashioned Victoria Day Fireworks, and enjoying a day off to celebrate an otherwise obsolete monarchy, your good friends across the pond were busy. No, not your crazy uncle Albert. It’s Coldplay, being totally adorable.

News for Monday: Angry Animals Issue

Monday, May 4th, 2009

* Surprise surprise, Wolverine tore up the box-office (with its adamantium claws) this weekend. I hear from reliable sources that the whole thing is kinda generic, though. Hmm.

* Nickleback’s Chad Kroeger is getting sued for punching another dude in the mouth. I’d make a joke about how the guy was probably insulting Chad’s band… but I think it’s implied.

* Demi Moore is stepping up to defend Madonna against media flack for dating a younger man. Which doesn’t make any sense: cougars don’t travel in packs.

* Next on ‘When Animals Attack’, I mean, also in news: Grizzly Bear wants to hunt down Snoop Dogg in Tennessee… to collaborate. Clearly, this was the only logical step from the Bear-Cat song.

* Coldplay are being accused of having plagiarized their song “Viva La Vida”. Yes, once again. The big question: can you plagiarize the same thing from three different people?

* Sugar Ray are going to be releasing a new album soon. Yeah, big deal: so are Spinal Tap. Honestly, I am more excited about the news from the joke band than this other band who sorta became a joke.
