A Night in the Life of Drake

Thursday, May 28th, 2009

MuchMusic recently followed rapper Drake as he headed to his first sold-out hometown show at Sound Academy in Toronto. From meeting up with his entourage and arriving at the venue, to chilling in the green room and stepping on stage, we were there to capture every moment. It’s a must-watch cause you’ll get a good sense of Drake’s humble personality and charming nature. Is it just us, or was he particularly charming towards our lovely VJ, Sarah Taylor? Who can blame him, really.

While travelling to his first hometown show, he told MuchMusic exclusively that he’s aiming for an end of year release. Drizzy’s already been in the studio with Jay-Z and super-producer Just Blaze, as well as Kanye and Young Jeezy according to MTV News, but he revealed that the real work is coming up next month.

Drake Talks Young Love with Keshia Chanté

Wednesday, May 20th, 2009

One of Drake’s aliases is “Young Angel” so it seemed fitting we talk to him about young love. Thanks to a keen ear who caught this shout out to “Tessa” (the name of Keshia Chanté’s mom) and a reference to her daughter on the second verse of his song “Deceiving,” we put two and two together. Drake rhymes: ”What up Tessa, I love you like my own mama / And your daughter’s getting grown, mama / And me, I’m just here working, waiting / patient for her to be ready to love and leave alone drama.”

MuchMusic VJ Sarah Taylor got Drake to open up about his past relationship with Canadian singer Keshia Chanté.

[ed note: we got a lot of good dish with Drake on Wednesday night, so we'll be rolling out news over the next week!]

A lot of people are surprised by the immense popularity of rapper Drake, considering he’s a dude without a record deal or official album, yet he’s packing venues with 2,300 fans who’ll dish out $40 for a ticket. But we get it. He’s figured out that magical balance of appealing to the ladies while not alienating his male counterparts.

I don’t know if you’ve been paying close attention to the previews for the new Matthew McConaughey movie Ghosts of Girlfriends Past, but just in case you were wondering - why, yes! That IS former VJ Amanda Walsh playing a bridesmaid/supporting role.

After leaving MuchMusic in 2004, Amanda moved to LA and has taken roles in several TV and movie projects. I chatted with her on the phone about her role in a flick that includes big cheese actors like Jennifer Garner, Matty McC and Michael Douglas!

You Need To Watch Her: Trish

Thursday, April 2nd, 2009

040109-trish-main

We’ve been buzzing about a new Canadian artist named Trish here at the MuchMusic for several months now. VJ Sarah Taylor became a fan of her dirty electro-pop/hip-hop/R&B after watching her perform at Honey Jam. Trish’s new music video “Don’t Watch Me” is pure house-party eye candy with a beat so grimy it makes you wanna get a fierce haircut, grab a drink and hit the dancefloor. (And maybe make a semi-naughty home video too.) Watch it here.
