The White Stripes attended the premiere of their documentary “The White Stripes Under Great White Northern Lights” at the Toronto International Film Festival on Friday. The film documents their 2007 tour in Canada where they performed at some unusual venues.

“We made a lot of new friends and played in a lot of places we never thought we would go,” Jack White told Sarah Taylor on the film premiere’s red carpet.

Jack White and filmmaker Emmett Malloy did some bonding while shooting in the Great White North. According to Malloy, White is a great bowler.

The Dead Weather Photos from Ottawa Bluesfest

Tuesday, July 21st, 2009

We had the opportunity to head to one of Canada’s best kept secrets this weekend. Bluesfest happens in Ottawa once a year and the bands booked are some of the biggest and best touring artists this summer.

What started as a festival celebrating blues music and culture has turned into one of Canada’s premiere concert events. Artists like Ice Cube, Luda, Yeah Yeah Yeah’s, The Dead Weather, Stone Temple Pilots, Gym Class Heroes were on the lineup this year.

Jack White’s new band The Dead Weather played Sunday night, and brought their raucous southern heavy-guitar blues to Ottawa. Despite their debut album Horehound only being out for a week, the crowd ate it up especially the set closer Treat Me Like Your Mother.

The Dead Weather - Treat Me Like Your Mother

Because Jack White refuses to be left in the dust on new video release days, his new The Dead Weather side-project presents a smokin’ vid for “Treat Me Like Your Mother”. Despite the fact that not much happens, it’s pretty awesome. Jilted exes or possibly frenemies Jack White and Allison Mossheart have a raging gun battle, complete with cigarette breaks! And unlike some other people I could name, they actually tear a piece out of each other. Check it out and let me know what you think!

Disclaimers: Kids, do not treat your mothers like this.

“It Might Get Loud”: It Might Also Get Friggin’ Awesome

Wednesday, June 24th, 2009

Take three actual guitar heroes, throw ‘em together in a room, and wait for, in the words of Jack White (of White Stripes fame), “probably a fist fight”. Okay, hopefully not (there are fragile guitars around!) but when you’ve got guitar legends like Led Zeppelin’s Jimmy Page and U2’s The Edge involved, pretty much anything defined by the word “awesome” could happen.

Apparently what happened is producer Thomas Tull had a dream cast in mind for a documentary about how “the personification of contemporary music IS the guitar”, and then they all said yes. Now the movie includes rock geniuses from three generations, so you can even go see it with your dad and he’ll like it too.

I am super excited about this: I just wish I could have actually been there for the Plant/Edge/White jam session! Anybody who has ever loved a good rock guitar riff has got to see this movie. Well, see the trailer first, but then definitely check out the documentary when it hits theaters in August, unless you’re in NYC or LA in which case it’s August 14.

News for Tuesday: Deluxe Long Weekend Recap Edition

Tuesday, May 19th, 2009

* Radiohead is back in the studio! No word if whatever they’re working on will be as mind-blowing (or randomly priced) as In Rainbows.

* Jack White and his other-other-bandmate Allison Mossheart (together they are The Dead Weather) came to fisticuffs in a New York City bar. And they haven’t even gone out on tour yet. Geez.

* Former O.C. star Rachel Bilson’s apartment got burgled while she was away spending time with her fiance, Darth Vader Hayden Christiansen. You’d think he would have felt it in the Force. Uh, I mean…

* The earthquake that rocked Los Angeles on Sunday night (4.7 on the Richter Scale) was apparently powerful enough to send some celebs running - to update their Twitter pages. Seriously?

* Kanye West is pleading “not guilty” to charges of “misdemeanor battery, grand theft and vandalism” for breaking a paparazzo’s camera back in September. Sounds worse than it looks, huh?

* Protest the Hero had their shows in Anchorage, Alaska, canceled. So they showed up in town with their beards to fight anyway. (Beard Fight?!)

* In a surprise twist (okay, maybe not), Broken Social Scene announce their reasons for canceling Olympic Island Fest: Race Cars.

* No Doubt kicked off their tour in Las Vegas this weekend. The 90’s: Fear them, they are coming for you (the band’s Canadian dates are in mid-June and -July)!

All Work and No Play Make Jacky Go Crazy!

Rock never sleeps, and apparently neither does Jack White.

In an interview with the folks over at MusicRadar, the singer spoke last week about the possibility of a new White Stripes New Album (next year) that the band has… already recorded songs for? Whoa whoa. Where does the man find the time?

Answer: He doesn’t. He’s actually Daniel from LOST I mean H.G Wells probably just a crazy genius.
