Being an awards show and all, last night’s Polaris Music Prize gala saw Kanye West’s recent MTV VMAs antics as a hot topic.
K’naan was actually there at the VMAs talking to Kanye right before he ran up on stage and stole Taylor Swift’s moment.
“He literally came up to where I was sitting to talk to me for a second, just before he went up,” K’naan told us. “So the people around me who didn’t know who I was were like, ‘Oh this guy must be somebody because Kanye just walked up to him and talked to him for a while.’ Then he jumped and went to sit where he was and literally did it right then, the thing. Then the people who were with me, it was no longer, ‘Wow’ it was ‘Boo, this guy knows Kanye.’ It was funny and embarrassing.”

I guess the problem with having a hip-hop-stravaganza in Canada is the fa-reaking BORDER. Why you gotta give hip-hop so much hassle, Monsieur Customs? Thankfully, no scheduled artists were prevented from performing at Sunday’s Rock The Bells concert, but the anticipation of such problems allegedly drained our line-up of some choice artists. Combined with scheduling conflicts and movie shoots, we were deprived of The Roots, Raekwon, House of Pain, Busta Rhymes, Mickey Factz, GZA, Cypress Hill… and at the last minute, Common was replaced by Mos Def. The loss of Common made a grown woman weep. Or at least think of weeping. (I totally shed a single tear in a dramatic moment).
More, and photos after the jump.

Are you up on your K’naan?? I hope so. His album Troubadour is one of my favourites of the year so far, his song “Dreamer” was used in an NFL Draft ad spot and I saw him leave the Coachella crowd speechless. In March he hooked up with director Nabil to shoot a video for “T.I.A.” - Nabil is the uber talented brain behind clips like Kanye’s “Welcome To Heartbreak” and Champion” - Yeezy posted the final cut yesterday, fresh off the press. Let’s just say it’s FACKING FIERCE. Wow.
