K’naan makes a welcome return with pal Nas by his side. Taken from his new More Beautiful Than Silence EP, “Nothing To Lose” is a confrontational track that goes hard until the chorus. Then K’naan’s melodic side takes over. More Beautiful Than Silence also includes a track with Nelly Furtado and is available as of [...]

K’naan was one of the big winners at last night’s Juno Awards, taking home the trophy for Single of the Year. Liz pulled him aside backstage to discuss the win, as well as the great job Drake did as a host and how his new album is full of bad songs.

February is Black History Month, an important and special time on the calendar for all people of African descent because it is a time to reflect upon where we have been as a collective and where we are going in the future. It’s a time to remember all of the pioneers who led the way for Black people to be judged as first class citizens worldwide and a time to celebrate our achievements in all realms of society from politics to sports to entertainment and everything in between. For us here at MuchMusic Black History Month is a time for us to recognize artist and songs which raised awareness of the Black struggle over time.

After the success of 2010’s Junos, which brought in the biggest audience in the award show’s history and included performances by Drake, Justin Bieber, Metric, Michael Buble, Billy Talent, and K’Naan, it was difficult to imagine that 2011’s show could top the landmark year. But that was before today’s announcement.
Hip hop superstar Drake has been announced as the host of the 2011 Junos, airing on CTV on Sunday, March 27, live from the Air Canada Centre in Drake’s hometown of Toronto. Drake is joining a long line of hosts who have been hugely successful in their careers both at home in Canada and abroad, including Alanis Morissette, Shania Twain, The Barenaked Ladies, Pamela Anderson, Nelly Furtado and two-time host Russell Peters.

I was honoured to get to participate in this year’s amazing We Day celebration in Toronto! Standing in an arena full of thousands of youths that are all there because they want to make the world a better place creates the most amazing energy I’ve ever felt. I literally had goosebumps all day!

After packing the Air Canada Centre with students from across the province, who were entertained and inspired by everyone from K’Naan, to Vancouver 2010 Olympian Alexandre Bilodeau, to the cast of Degrassi, and Deepak Chopra, fans, volunteers and celebs kept the positive party going in the parking lot of the MuchMusic Headquarters.

There is something beautiful and fascinating about rediscovering or uncovering a part of you that has been with you the whole time. These are some of the thoughts running through my mind as I spend time attending Manifesto events around Toronto this year. The annual festival of community and culture is back again this year with a jam packed six days of art, music, film, community, change and suggested manifestation in the most magical sense. There are many highlights to this years shows and activities, but as someone who is focused on understanding and exploring the art of storytelling, the screening of Nabil Elderkin’s documentary Bouncing Cats really left a mark over my heart.
