News for Thursday: Jumbleitis Edition

Thursday, July 23rd, 2009

* Ever wonder what the I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! stars are doing now? Well, Heidi Pratt will be performing during the Miss Universe pageant next month (oh noes not more singing), and Stephen Baldwin is bankrupt. The two stories are otherwise unrelated.

* Grey’s Anatomy Star T.R. Knight talks about how leaving the show was the best decision… OH GOSH does that mean GEORGE IS REALLY DEAD?! Nooooooooooooo….

* Hey Twihards! You lost your Edward t-shirts!

* New CD news to go crazy about: Modest Mouse’s new album No One’s First and You’re Next! is hitting the stores August 4th (and August 18th on vinyl), and Matthew Good’s fourth solo work, Vancouver, will be around October 5th. Woo!

* And if you aren’t already tired of news about Michael Jackson’s death, then know that police have subpoenaed his nurse (he had a nurse?), and raided the office of his doctor looking for evidence of manslaughter. Talk about being sick to death of something!

News for Monday: Bad News (Bears) Edition

Monday, July 20th, 2009

* A cancerous tumour has been discovered in the salivary gland of Beastie Boys member Adam Yauch. Extra bad news: the tour is being cancelled and the Hot Sauce Committee album is being postponed! What is this, unintentional self-Sabotage?

* Ex-O.C cutie Misha Barton is still hospitalized, and missing the premiere of her new flick, The Homecoming. Maybe she got sick of appearing in movies nobody saw since leaving television…

* Rumour has it that Rihanna will be joined by All-American Rejects vocalist Tyson Ritter on her upcoming Rated R album. That’s probably just as weird as Keane working with Kanye West.

* Kings of Leon have announced that they will be playing a FREE show in New York City! Time to hatch an evil plan to find a way to get passes…

* Aaaand, Michael Jackson is continuously in the news because of a film made of footage from rehearsals for his London concerts, set to be released at some mysterious future time. Aren’t you excited?

News for Wednesday: Sequels and Solos Edition

Wednesday, July 15th, 2009

* It’s Harry Potter Day! I’m so excited for this movie! While we’re on the topic, did’ja ever think Emma Watson would team up to work with Marilyn Manson? No, seriously. Next step is for her to get a Death Eater mask.

* News about Miley Cyrus‘ next movie: she’s going to be playing a fairy. Ummmm… riiiiiiight….

* Announced movie sequels I’m struggling to care about: Bridget Jones III, where the title lady is preggers, and Scream IV, where, well, there will be screaming.

* And now, a list of dudes who think they can make it on their own: Julian Casablancas of the Strokes announces a solo album, as does Alec Ounsworth from Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, and in more tragic news, Mattie Safer leaves the Rapture. Going solo: all the cool kids are doing it!

* Dudes, the LAPD are now considering Michael Jackson’s death a homicide, ie: somebody KILLED him. Craziness! I wonder whodunnit…

* Fresh back from the jungle, Heidi Pratt is getting ready to Pump YOU Up! This would be funnier if it weren’t so weird.

* If we may have told you, in the past, that Soundgarden was going to reunite, would you be mad at us if we said it was now just a B-side and Box-set release? Yeah, don’t be TOO mad…

* In case you were curious about Michael Jackson’s Will: Paul McCartney saw this one coming.

* The wilderness gets revenge: Ozzy Osbourne’s dog eaten by a coyote (and during the MJ memorial too!)

* Anyone ready for some “darker and moodier” music from Linkin Park’s Chester Bennington, and his new band, Dead By Sunrise, raise your hand! Okay, where are those hands?

* Natalie Portman is getting ready to school you in the kitchen. Or watch you get schooled? Something like that, I’m sure. I hope she brings her headdress!

Never Can Say Goodbye.

Tuesday, July 7th, 2009

A lot has been said about Michael Jackson since he passed away on June 25th, 2009. Reporters, friends, pop culture junkies, music historians, even myself… we’ve all waxed poetic about the man, his music and the legacy he leaves behind.

But of all the countless words that have been said and will continue to be spoken about MJ for the months/years/DECADES to come, this is perhaps the most touching and honest of them all: (watch)

In that one moment, Paris Jackson humanized her father in a way that no one ever has. Raw emotion, straight from the heart, from someone who knew him NOT as a superstar…or an icon…or a tabloid “freak”. For this little girl, he was simply “Daddy” - and the pain on her face and in her voice was simply heartbreaking.

Today we laid to rest the greatest entertainer of a generation, possibly of all time. Michael Jackson stands right alongside Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra and The Beatles as a man who changed music, pop culture and the world FOREVER.

For me, Michael Jackson was my musical hero - and the single biggest reason why I ever wanted to study and write about music, or work in music television. My greatest MJ memories are wrapped up in a series of “firsts” - the first album I ever owned (Thriller), the first video I ever saw (Billie Jean), and the first concert I ever went to (The Victory Tour in 1984). His music is quite literally the soundtrack of my life, and all I can do as a fan is be grateful that I was alive to witness and appreciate his greatness.

Magic never dies.

News for Monday: Brought to you by the letter “M” Edition

* Never-has-anything-good-to-say Noel Gallagher has insulted Coldplay’s Chris Martin in an Italian newspaper interview for NOT doing drugs. Pretty sure that’s sending the wrong message to the kids.

* We’re pretty sure this one is fake, but here’s an interesting story about a preggers vampire-lovin’ Kristin Stewart.

* Panic! at the Disco break up! Sort of!

* MUSE fans should be aware of The Resistance this September (and it’s track listing, as can be seen on Muse’s twitter)

* Finally, your MJ news recap: the tribute is still going ahead, the estate is still in question, and the record sale numbers are still rising.
