Covers Covered Well: Vol. II

Wednesday, January 20th, 2010

covers

As Kate most beautifully said in a previous blog (see?), there is a fine art to covering music. Covers covered well are great. Covers covered badly are beyond shit: (this!) DAMNIT BRITNEY.

Here are some of the great variety:

Pomplamoose - “Mrs. Robinson” [listen]
This duo does some mean covers, but this has to be my favourite. I lahv her voice, his guitar skillz… but I can’t get over that mole. Normally I don’t mind them, but .. er. Yeah.

RIP JAY REATARD

Tuesday, January 19th, 2010

RIP Jay.

Last week on January 12th, the sad news that garage rocker Jay Reatard had died suddenly in his sleep shocked music fans everywhere. Speculations that this 29-year-old legend had passed away was at first deemed to be a rumor, but to everyone;s dismay the tragic death has been confirmed. Now rumors of homicide are beginning to surface and it is being reported that the Memphis police are currently searching for a possible suspect pertaining to his death.

Regarded highly for his near perfect album Blood Visions (2006) and recent hit Watch Me Fall (2009), Jay Reatard was responsible for reviving lo-fi garage punk. With his prolific career spanning 22 full length albums, there is no doubt of Jay’s talent as a performing artist. Playing nearly a thousand shows all over the world as a solo artist and member of numerous bands by the age of 29, there is no telling what more he could have accomplished in his lifetime.

Metric: Exposed. In 3D, On Ice

Wednesday, January 13th, 2010

Bigger than ever!

So, there’s a band out there. A sorta indie, sorta pop, sorta dance, sorta new wave band. They gotsa sexy as hell lead singer, a questionably high-pitched guitarist, a wicked as hell bassist and yes, they have a (post concert) sweaty ass drummer. They’re the only band that can sport sunglasses indoors and have sex with an entire crowd through music. They are the shit.

They’re Metric.

Metric, oh, Metric. Hailing from Toronto since 1998, Emily Haines, Jimmy Shaw, Josh Winstead and Joules Scott-Key form the best band in the world.

I present to you, a complete exposé of their discography. “Metric: Exposed. In 3D, On Ice,” if you will.

If you missed the first airing on Sunday, you can watch it online anytime you want! And also, make sure to read some words about the show from its writer (here) and producer (here).

Mehek’s Music Monday: Jay Sean

Monday, December 14th, 2009

Hay JAY

It’s near impossible to escape the pop-R&B sounds from this Indian-UK native; his debut North American single, “Down” featuring Lil’ Wayne started to gain momentum towards the end of this past summer, and there’s been no stopping him since. It went to #1 back in October, and his latest release, “Do You Remember”, features Sean Paul and Lil’ John.

For me… he’s old news. Thirteen year-old self old news (fah real – that’s a lil’ old). So I’mma share some tales about this dude, cause I think you all really need to know about his past … and his future.

Intrigued yet?

More after the jump!

Don’t Forget About Stars

Monday, December 14th, 2009

Yaaaaayyyy

Well. Happy Monday. I guess.

Okay, that was so obviously sarcastic, that I feel the need to make it up to you. Allow me to re-introduce you to a (mind da lingo) F#CK!NG amazing band - Stars.

Bare with me while I venture off into - cue Maggie & The Ferocious Beast theme song - nowhere land! (Mad props to whoever’s actually seen that show before, btw). Okay so… yesterday morning, I get up, take a shower, get dressed, eat leftover sushi from the night before, etc etc. K. My aunt picks me up to take me out for lunch (yeah, she one of those cool aunts). She turns on her CD player… and I hear something… eloquent. Something… indie. Something… pop. SOMETHING ELOQUENT INDIE-POP ISH.
