Stuff You Should Listen To!

Listen!

Just in case your iPod is looking a little dry these days, might I recommend some tunes for you to spice things up again?

The Sunshine Underground is one of England’s rising musical talents, after capturing the attention of audiences all over Britain in 2005 when the lads won a BBC Battle of the Bands competition. This four-piece band from Leeds released their first album Raise The Alarm (2006) which contained the incredibly catchy songs, “Borders” and “Commerical Breakdown”. The Sunshine Underground has been M.I.A for the last couple of years much to fans’ disapproval, however are in the midst of making a comeback tour. They have recently released their new EP Everything, Right Now, with their feature track “Coming to Save You”. The full second album is anticipated to be released in February 2010. It’s well worth the wait, so don’t get your knickers in a twist!

Fact: The band named themselves after The Chemical Brothers’ song “The Sunshine Underground”, from the album Surrender.

Sounds like: Franz Ferdinand and the Chemical Brothers’ love-child. TSU produces a variety of punk, dance-rock, funk, and indie sounds.

New Foo Fighters Song Released

Thursday, September 24th, 2009

foofighters

With a greatest hits album comes a few previously unreleased tracks or new tracks all together and the Foo Fighters are no exception to this. The guys are set to release a greatest hits album in November and have decided to add two new tracks. One of which is called Wheels and has been recently posted on their MySpace.

After a few listens it’s clear that it’s a catchy tune that will probably be played everywhere. Although Wheels is a lot softer in nature than previous Foo Fighters songs, their unique traits are still apparent in the song. Have a listen and let me know what you think.

Check out the track listing for their greatest hits album after the jump, it really is great!

New Music Alert: Our Lady Peace!

Thursday, July 16th, 2009

olp2009

Usually these Alert! posts are largely to make sure you’re in the know about and prepared for awesome music happenings for the future. But guys: the future is now. Our Lady Peace’s new album and seventh studio effort, Burn, Burn is gonna hit the stores on Tuesday. I guess to prevent any leaks, the guys have gone ahead and released the album to the internet for streaming themselves. Good thinking, guys! Let’s take a peak at it…

My first thoughts: sounds like OLP, but not like old school Clumsy-era OLP, you know what I mean? Still not sure if that makes it less good… The single “All You Did Was Save My Life” sounds pretty much like a single should; “Monkey Brains” has a pretty good hook; and I am really digging “Refuge”. But Raine Maida isn’t doing that screachy vocal thing he used to do anywhere, like in Superman Is Dead, which I was kinda looking forward to hearing. “White Flags” is probably the closest they’re getting to what I was hoping for.

What do you think of this one? Are you going to pick it up on Tuesday, or stream it forever? Am I right about it, or am I totally off track, sitting in the middle of a field somewhere, lost and confused?

Nice! Green Day’s Mike Dirnt is going to be releasing a sneaker, and above you can see the alleged sneak peek. Pretty bad ass. Speaking of Green Day, they’ve been working on their eighth studio album 21st Century Breakdown - their first in 5 years. It’ll hit stores on May 15, and is two years in the making.

Marilyn Manson Is Back & His Site Is Creepy

Tuesday, March 24th, 2009

032409-marilyn

So Marilyn Manson has got some new material coming out, and for this one he reunited with his old bromego Twiggy. It’s been almost a decade since they’ve worked together, but along with keyboardist Chris Vrenna they produced the upcoming The High End of Low (May 26) in Manson’s Hollywood Hills studio.

If you’re down with hearing how Manson’s sound is progressing (or not?), a new track called “We’re From America” will be available for free download on his website this Friday, March 27. I went to his site a few minutes ago and almost peed my pants cause it’s so creepy. Then again, I can’t watch the Saw movies, so maybe I’m just a weenie.

PS: The official first single is called “Arma…geddon” and MM will be touring this summer.

On Ben Gibbard’s solo tour a couple years ago, he started playing a wee tune called “Casino Blues”. Now it’s being released officially as a Death Cab For Cutie track called “Little Bribes”, as part of a four song EP being unveiled on Stereogum this week. The Open Door EP will be available to purchase on iTunes later this month, but for now you can preview the songs (one per day for the rest of the week) here!

The Next Big Thing: Drake

We have nothing but love for a Canadian rapper by the name of Drake, who’s rhyming side-by-side with Lil Wayne on stages all over the world. He was a tad tardy for our interview (watch it here!), but showed up at Toronto clothing boutique Nomad ready to talk about whether he’s an artist or a product (his answer may surprise you), and what his conversations with Wayne are all about.

We’ve been burning his new mixtape So Far Gone, along with the 300,000 other people who’ve also downloaded it for free. Here’s a peek at what Drake revealed to MuchMusic.. Continue Reading »
