VFest Toronto: Day 2

Tuesday, September 1st, 2009

pharrell-vfest

I guess if you could sum up day 2, it would go down as the day that was too freezing to be August. And also again: where was the crowd? And also also: kind of an improvement over day 1. Wellll, here’s the thing. Move Grizzly Bear and Franz Ferdinand to day 2, and we’ve got ourselves a winner.

New Music Alert: Our Lady Peace!

Thursday, July 16th, 2009

olp2009

Usually these Alert! posts are largely to make sure you’re in the know about and prepared for awesome music happenings for the future. But guys: the future is now. Our Lady Peace’s new album and seventh studio effort, Burn, Burn is gonna hit the stores on Tuesday. I guess to prevent any leaks, the guys have gone ahead and released the album to the internet for streaming themselves. Good thinking, guys! Let’s take a peak at it…

My first thoughts: sounds like OLP, but not like old school Clumsy-era OLP, you know what I mean? Still not sure if that makes it less good… The single “All You Did Was Save My Life” sounds pretty much like a single should; “Monkey Brains” has a pretty good hook; and I am really digging “Refuge”. But Raine Maida isn’t doing that screachy vocal thing he used to do anywhere, like in Superman Is Dead, which I was kinda looking forward to hearing. “White Flags” is probably the closest they’re getting to what I was hoping for.

What do you think of this one? Are you going to pick it up on Tuesday, or stream it forever? Am I right about it, or am I totally off track, sitting in the middle of a field somewhere, lost and confused?

News for Wednesday: Underwear, and Underhanded Unions

Wednesday, May 6th, 2009

* So much for singing in a church choir! Today’s big reveal is that Katy Perry once got secretly married (?!), just to upset her folks. Oh, teenage rebellion! How cute!

* In unnecessary-exposure news: Mrs. “Posh Spice” Beckham is now appearing on a 20-foot banner in NYC for Armani Underwear. I believe we’ve already seen enough, no?

* Hot on the tail of Wolverine (or claws, as the case may be), word is that Deadpool (played in the movie by Canadian actor Ryan Reynolds) is getting his own movie spin-off. This could be hilarious, and hopefully not hilariously lame, like SOME people. I’m talking to you, Hugh Jackman.

* SOMEONE is getting a little too into his day job: Kiefer Sutherland headbuts a dude! This is neither 24 nor the world cup, Kief.

* The 90’s get a little clearer every day: Our Lady Peace are releasing a new album. I hope it’ll be awesome and not just another retro-throwback (*ahem-sugar-ray-reunion-ahem*).
