Arts and Crafts

feist

This will very much just be a post about my undying love for the record label, Arts & Crafts.

Arts & Crafts is a Toronto-native, indie record label. It was launched in 2002 by Broken Social Scene’s Kevin Drew and Jeffrey Remedios, a former Virgin Records executive. The first album that A&C backed was Broken Social Scene’s You Forgot It In People. Since then, 48 other albums from 26 artists have been released on the label. A&C has won 12 Juno awards via these 49 albums and is known as one of Canada’s most important record labels to date.

Arts & Crafts has made it policy for all of their releases to have quality, originality and uniqueness to them. That’s exactly why such fantastic albums have been released by these artists:

The American Analog Set; Amy Millan; Apostle of Hustle; Bell Orchestre; Broken Social Scene, Charles Spearin; Constantines; Feist; Gentleman Reg; Gonzales; Jason Collett; Los Campesinos!; Phoenix; Sally Seltmann; Stars; Still Life Still; The Dears; The Hidden Cameras; The Most Serene Republic; The Stills; Timbre Timbre; Valley Of The Giants; Years; Young Galaxy; Zeus.

Tell me that you don’t love almost every single of of those bands. Do it. And for those of you that haven’t heard of any of them… shame on you. Seriously. Just get out.

Now let’s say that you are one of those people who hasn’t heard of any of these bands. Let’s go over (my top) albums that have been released on Arts & Crafts:

1. Masters of the Burial - Amy Millan (2009)

2. Broken Social Scene - Broken Social Scene (2005)

3. The Reminder - Feist (2007)

4. Idols of Exile - Jason Collett (2005)

5. Hold on Now, Youngster… - Los Campesinos! (2008)

6. Set Yourself on Fire - Stars (2004)

7. Oceans Will Rise - The Stills (2008)

8. Say Us - Zeus (2010)

And to really give you a taste of what Arts & Crafts really stands for (music-wise), here’s what I think are the best songs off of each of the above albums:

1. “Low Sail” - Masters of the Burial - Listen Here

2. “7/4 (Shoreline)” - Broken Social Scene - Listen Here

3. “1234” - The Reminder - Listen Here

4. “Fire” - Idols of Exile - Listen Here

5. “You! Me! Dancing!” - Holy on Now, Youngster… - Listen Here

6. “Set Yourself on Fire” - Set Yourself on Fire - Listen Here

7. “I’m With You” - Oceans Will Rise - Listen Here

8. “How Does It Feel” - Say Us - Listen Here

These eight songs make up a solid 40% of my favourite songs of the past ten years. Just to be clear, these songs are just a demonstration of the quality that Arts & Crafts backs. This is one label that isn’t mainly in it for the money. Dont’cha just wish all record labels were like that?

A&C makes me a proud fan of Canadian music… and good music in general.

A “Kate” once asked me, “Say, Matt… Would you ever want to work for Arts & Crafts?” The thing is, I sort of didn’t hear her, so I kinda just gave one of those “Uh. Yeahhh” things. But Kate. I officially have an answer for you: fuckyeah.

Check out the Arts & Crafts, here.

phoenix

Let’s do this thing. Four songs. All amazing. Listen.

Muse - “Resistance” (The Resistance, 2009) [listen]

Phoenix - “Run Run Run” (Alphabetical, 2004) [listen]

Vampire Weekend - “Giving Up the Gun” (Contra, 2010) [listen]

Sea Wolf - “You’re A Wolf” (Leaves In The River, 2007) [listen]

SOME NOTES:

* Muse played the ACC on March 8 and apparently put on the best show ever. Literally. Definitely regretting not going to the show now…
* Phoenix kicks ass.
* Vampire Weekly was the musical guest on Saturday Night Live last Saturday. Watch here. Ezra has cool hair.
* Sea Wolf = beardfest. SO GOOD THOUGH.

Adam Lambert and Phoenix to play MTV’s Unplugged

Friday, March 5th, 2010

adam-lambert

Adam Lambert and Phoenix will perform on the relaunched version of MTV’s acoustic concert series, MTV Unplugged.

Under the new format, Unplugged will air on MTV, VH1 and CMT and the artists will correspond with their viewers. Adam Lambert’s show will air on VH1 while Phoenix will appear on MTV. Other artists confirmed are The Script (VH1) and Reba McEntire(CMT).

The most recent incarnation of the show was online with episodes featuring Katy Perry and Vampire Weekend. This time around, each Unplugged performance will feature a surprising cover song or contradictory moment to play with sponsor Starburst’s tagline, “It’s a juicy contradiction.”

MTV Unplugged was originally launched by MTV in the 90’s and has aired historic performances by artists like Nirvana and Lauryn Hill.

Besides Lambert and Phoenix, you may expect to see some other exciting acts this time around. Van Toffler, the president of MTVN’s Music Films and Logo group told AdAge magazine, “I would love to see Prince do one, I think Gaga’s got the chops to do one and people would love to see her just sit down at a piano and sing her songs. I’ve always wanted to have U2 do one.”

singles-2009

Two different music tastes, two different playlists of tunes! These aren’t necessarily ranked in order of our favourite songs of the year, but a mish mash of what we felt best represented 2009 for us.

After the jump, see & listen to our lists - including tracks from Kid Cudi, Kings of Leon, Beyonce, Julian Casablancas, The XX and tons more.

Phoenix @ Sound Academy

Tuesday, December 8th, 2009

mmm hmmm

It’s caa-rayyy-zeh to see how far Phoenix has come in a matter of months. Leave it to major “best of 2009″ buzz for their album Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix, a Cadillac commercial, bazillions of remixes floating around teh interslice and BAM! Suddenly they’re selling out Sound Academy in Toronto; quite the leap from the Phoenix (which they played in June).

I’ve thrice seen these cool-as-beans hommes in concert, and they’re still kicking out the jams with as much passion and panache as they did in ‘06. The only things that have changed are their growing catalogue and me being a baby about larger venues that don’t feel as intimate as they used to. Wah, me. (I’m over it). They deserve success, dammit!!

Pics and show recap after le jump!

Jesse: A Phoenix and Cobra Weekend

Phoenix rocks it

So I’m sitting in MuchMusic at my desk right now as Hedley is setting up and Jacob is jamming on the piano. Sounds wicked. Back to work, I’m currently listening to 30 Seconds To Mars – This Is War, prepping to interview Jared Leto in a few weeks, thinking how I haven’t updated the blog in so long. I’m sorry. I’ve been running around all over going to shows every night, filming here and there. I try and stay busy, sometimes too busy. Let’s recap the weekend.

Saturday: I had a much needed day of rest and pretty much did just that. I slept for most of the day recouping from a week of little or no sleep.

Went and saw PHOENIX with special guests Holy Fuck at the Sound Academy. Amazing show. It felt like every song was a hit, or at least I could sing every song. Maybe that’s because I listened to Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix on repeat this summer while driving down to California. You know when you listen to something so much while doing a certain activity. Now whenever I listen to it I’m reminded of surfing the coast of Cali and skateboarding along the boardwalks. Always good memories to be reminded of.

061609-phoenix-1

Parisian band Phoenix tore through the Phoenix concert theatre like a phoenix on Monday, a day I have renamed “Phoenix”. On a scale from 1 to Phoenix, I rate this show Phoenix plus infinity. Aaaand now I’ll stop.

But seriously, this show was stellar. Crisp, joyous, dance-tacular and a clear indication that these dapper gentlemen are well on the rise. I guess a musical slot on Saturday Night Live in April doesn’t hurt, eh?

Liszto-Bratpack-Mania

Wednesday, April 29th, 2009

“Lisztomania” by Phoenix is one of those songs that you quickly assume is laced with some sort of addictive substance. Chocolate, maybe peanut M&Ms, maybe AN ILLEGAL DRUG. At first you’re like, “I’m just gonna listen to this song once.” Then, “oh, just one more time.” And before you know it, you’ve listened to it 93 times in a row.***

But someone made it even better. This is a little old now… but I just remembered it and it wasn’t posted while I was on vacation, so I feel like it’s my duty to share it. So check this out - a perfect blend of 80s brat pack movies and “Lisztomania” - almost like they were born to be together.

PS: This has more YouTube views than the official video. Funny!

*** May be an exaggeration.
