Tuesday, September 22nd, 2009

Even though they have a name you can’t say on TV, F**ked Up were the winners of the Polaris Music Prize in Toronto last night.

“Until the very moment they made the announcement, I thought there was no way in hell that we would win,” said frontman Damian Abraham. “This is incredible. I’m more shocked than everyone at CTV. Thanks to everyone that played on the record and Jon Drew that produced the album, everyone at Beggars / Matador, Steve Jordan and everyone at Polaris!”

Mercury Prize short list!

Tuesday, July 21st, 2009

merc2009noms

Once again ladies and gents it is time to place your bets on what album you liked best and see how it stacks up with those who make the big decisions. What I mean to say is the 2009 Mercury Prize short list nominees have been announced! Confused? Let me break it down.

- It’s all about the best albums that have come out over the past year by British or Irish artists
- The short list is made up of the “12 Albums Of the Year” and the winner/numero uno will be announced in September
- It is Europe’s number one arts prize, in terms of coverage and influence
- The music on the album is the only thing they take into account, so it has gotta be a mighty fine piece of music!
- It is kinda like the Polaris Music Prize
- Past winners included Franz Ferdinand, Arctic Monkeys, and Klaxons

So ready to see the top twelve albums?!

Timber Timbre. I had heard of them many a time but I had never really taken to time to stop, pause, and listen. After hearing through word of mouth of their greatness, and after their 2009 Polaris Music Prize long list nomination, I made a mental note to look them up. It was then that I found out that Timber Timbre had just been signed to my favorite Canadian label Arts & Crafts, and that Timber Timbre is basically just one very talented soul named Taylor Kirk.

Friday night I was lucky enough to see Timber Timbre live at Toronto’s Church of the Redeemer. Never having seen a concert at a church before, and still being a new Timber Timbre listener I didn’t know quite what to expect.

What I got was chills. The very best kind. Review and tour news after the jump.
