Best Album Covers of the Past 10 years?

Friday, October 23rd, 2009

Gigwise recently posted what they think are “The 50 Best Album Covers of the 2000s”! You can check out all of their top 50 picks, but here are my fave four (with their ranking included)!

santogold-santogold-33
18. Santogold: ‘Santogold’
Maybe it’s just because I love glitter, but I think it really makes this album cover. The more glitter the better I say!

10-animalcollective-merriweath
10. Animal Collective: ‘Merriweather Post Pavilion’
Trippy right?! Yeah that’s just a picture! Optical illusions are so confusing but I like them! Downside? Makes my brain hurt if I look at it for too long.

9deathfromabove1979
9. Death From Above 1979: ‘You’re A Woman, I’m A Machine’
Not only is this a fantastic album by a fantastic band (that is now broken up *tear*), but this is a fantastic album cover. Simple looking and simply effortlessly cool. Kinda Andy Warholish too. Rad.

3yeahyeahyeahs-itsblitz
3. Yeah Yeah Yeahs: ‘It’s Blitz!’
Is is blitz! I don’t like eggs usually as a food, but this cracked egg makes some pretty great art!

And now for my own personal choice that didn’t make the list…
vampireweekendcd2
Vampire Weekend: ‘Vampire Weekend’
This album cover makes me miss Polaroid cameras and the way that they could instantly capture a moment. Also this cover completely reflects Vampire Weekend and their preppy fun good times sound! Woohoo!

What album covers are your faves? Did they make the list?

Yeah Yeah Yeahs Headline Ottawa Bluesfest

Tuesday, July 21st, 2009

We had the opportunity to head to one of Canada’s best kept secrets this weekend. Bluesfest happens in Ottawa once a year and the bands booked are some of the biggest and best touring artists this summer.
Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Ottawa Bluesfest
What started as a festival celebrating blues music and culture has turned into one of Canada’s premiere concert events. Artists like Ice Cube, Luda, Yeah Yeah Yeah’s, The Dead Weather, Stone Temple Pilots, Gym Class Heroes were on the lineup this year.

A lil bit of Monday music news!

Monday, June 29th, 2009

* MGMT, Karen O of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and a German math artist (huh?) are said to guest on the new Flaming Lips LP! Should be something crazy awesome!

*There are pianos all over London England! As part of an art project titled “Play Me, I’m Yours” pianos have been placed all over the city and anyone is free to play them. That would be just lovely if you were strolling down the street and some jaunty tune came out of nowhere! Like you were in a movie!

*Indie rockers, including Sara of Tegan & Sara, TV On The Radio’s Dave Sitek and Death Cab For Cutie’s Nick Harmer, share their thoughts on Michael Jackson’s tragic passing.

* The new Most Serene Republic album titled “…And The Ever Expanding Universe” comes out July 14th! If you’re a fan check out a sneak peak full stream here!

Tiny Masters of Today

Lately there has been little to listen to as it seems kind of dry for new music until I stumbled upon Tiny Masters of Today. Tiny Masters of Today consists of 15 year-old Ivan and his 13 year-old sister Ada. This adolescent group has given me new hope that there is new & good music out there and all you need to do is search for it.

This 3 piece group have been receiving a lot of attention lately and rightfully so because they are producing some catchy tunes. I read some stuff online about these guys and it seems like they aren’t getting enough credit because of their age. Sure they are teens and their music doesn’t seem like it can be difficult to produce but for someone that age to create a catchy tune like Pop Chart it’s pretty good. I think that in a few years when they all start to mature and write some difficult songs they will get the credit they deserve.

Their single Pop Chart proves that these kids can play something that is catchy and can really get them going. After watching the video for Pop Chart I instantly went to their MySpace page and have been listening to it since. All the songs posted are catchy and I haven’t gotten tired of them yet. I think that their sound is similar to the Pixies, of course a modern day Pixies. And you can also add a little bit of The Ramones and The Yeah Yeah Yeahs to that mix.

Check them out and let me know what you think. Am I totally wrong about them or do you think they can make it?
