You can now learn about Beyoncé in class. According to S2S Magazine, a professor at Rutgers University has decided to offer a course titled “Politicizing Beyoncé,” where students can learn about the superstar singer’s influence as icon of social change.
But this won’t be a fly-by course. “This isn’t a course about Beyoncé’s political engagement or how many times she performed during President Obama’s inauguration weekend,” says Professor Kevin Allred. It’ll take a deeper perspective of Beyoncé’s life, music, and cultural significance on Black feminism.
“She certainly pushes boundaries,” says Allred. “While other artists are simply releasing music, she’s creating a grand narrative around her life, her career, and her persona.”
