This week’s announcement that Charlie Hunnam would be portraying sexually adventurous billionaire Christian Grey in the film adaptation of EL James’ bestselling trilogy 50 Shades of Grey brought about an online petition to replace Hunnam with White Collar actor Matt Bomer. Colour me confused, but I still don’t see how Humman isn’t a great choice to play 27 year old Christian Grey, (Hunnam is 33, essentially the same age in male Hollywood years) who is described as being incredibly handsome (check) with a chiseled bod (check check).
Hunnam’s Sons of Anarchy co-star Taryn Manning was interviewed on the red carpet in New York last night at the Styled To Rock Event and was just as perplexed with the backlash as many of us have been. The actress quickly came to her co-star’s defense and was this close to making an excellent pitch for Hunnam as Grey.
Manning recalled running into Hunnam in a diner while with her mother and said “He was so nice to my mom. He stood up to meet her. Just very chivalrous, old-fashioned and great manners. I have nothing but love for him.” Nice to moms? We’re sold! Get him on the big screen!
Manning also recalled that in the moments before Hunnam was ‘so nice’ to her mom (le sigh), he was reading! “He was sitting alone just reading it and, I don’t know, at that moment, I looked at him in a different light.” Manning continued, “I had already seen him on set so dedicated, and then seeing him sitting alone at breakfast just working on his craft, he is just a true actor.” Oh lawd, hot guy reading alone? Get that red room ready for production!
Manning continued, saying “Do you realize every single woman that is my friend is, like, ‘Tell me everything about Charlie.’ All the time. He is kind of like how girls feel about Eminem or Justin Timberlake. He is just a heartthrob, so I don’t understand why anyone would question that casting decision.”
Wait a second. Did she say Eminem? A heartthrob like Eminem? We love us some Slim Shady, but heartthrob? Oh Taryn, we were so close!
