Taylor Swift may be considered the reigning the queen of break up songs, but to know about heartbreak is to allow yourself to fall in love, and that’s just what Swift sings about in her latest song, Begin Again. Premiering the new single on Good Morning America, Swift has proven once again that while she is more than capable of releasing the carefree, jump-around-your-room-with-a-hairbrush break up songs like We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together, she also has the pen of a poet and knows how to craft emotionally gut-wrenching songs that speak to her millions of fans.
Writing about finding new love after suffering the loss of a relationship, Swift sings about the seemingly insignificant things in a relationship that matter so much, with the lines “Walked in expecting you’d be late, but you got here early and you stand and wait. I walk to you./You pulled my chair out and helped me in, and you don’t know how nice that is but I do.” Singing about her love for her namesake James Taylor, Swift leaves small clues throughout the song on who the track is aimed at, with just enough information to put media outlets on a scavenger hunt.
Speaking to Good Morning America, Swift describes Begin Again as “…a song about, kind of, when you’ve gotten through a really bad relationship and you finally dust yourself off and go on that first date, after a horrible break up. And the vulnerability that goes along with all of that.” Begin Again is the second single from Swift’s upcoming fourth studio album Red, which is set to hit stores on October 22. Born Again is now available on iTunes.
