The nominations for were announced last night via a live stream on MTV.com. Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained and Seth MacFarlane’s Ted tied for most nominations with seven each, including Movie of the Year. Other top nominated films include The Perks of Being a Wallflower, Life of Pi, Silver Linings Playbookand The Dark Knight Rises.
The biggest surprise of the night was Twilight’s snub. For a film franchise that has dominated the MTV Movie Awards since 2009, it surprisingly only received one nomination for Taylor Lautner in the Best Shirtless Performance category. It looks like the MTV Movie Awards are trying to regain the credibility they had before being taken over by the Twilight fandom.
Many of the regular award categories were notably excluded in this year’s line-up, including Best Cast, Best Comedic Performance, Best Gut Wrenching Performance, Best On Screen Transformation, Best On Screen Dirt Bag and Best Music. To fill that void are new categories such as Best WTF Moment, Best On Screen Duo and Best Villain.
Last year, Emma Stone was awarded the first ever Trailblazer Award, which celebrated her career achievements in film. That category is also absent this year. Instead, a new category titled Comic Genius Award will honour comedian Will Ferrell.
Category differences aside, my predictions from last night were not completely off. Eddie Redmayne in Les Misérables, Suraj Sharma in Life of Pi, and Ezra Miller in The Perks of Being a Wallflower all scored nominations in the category of Best Breakthrough Performance. Nine-year old Oscar nominee Quvenzhané Wallis scored a nod for her role in Beasts Of The Southern Wild, as did this year’s MTV Movie Awards host Rebel Wilson for her hilarious role in Pitch Perfect.
The 2013 MTV Movie Awards will be hosted by Pitch Perfect star Rebel Wilson and air on MTV on April 9 at 9 p.m. ET. Be sure to check back on our blog in the coming weeks for more updates on presenters and performers.
