Last night I had the pleasure of witnessing one of the best SKA/Reggae shows I have seen in years.
The show started off with The One Night Band from Montreal. A 7 piece SKA/Reggae band with 3 singers and a bunch of great songs. As the room started to fill up, people started to dance (a rarity in “too cool” Toronto) and I started to feel bad for the band. They’re from Montreal and I’ve been to SKA shows in Montreal. EVERYONE dances, the floor shakes violently and you start looking around for a place to hold on when the floor finally gives in. The band was awesome and I hope they know that just because we don’t dance doesn’t mean we don’t like them.
The Aggrolites hit the stage at exactly 10:18pm and played over 20 songs back to back with only one short break to towel off in the middle. These guys can entertain! Insane Hammond organ solos, sing-alongs that had the entire club shouting at the top of their lungs, and a solid hour of dirty Reggae music that had everyone dancing and the floor shaking violently, Montreal style!
The night ended with the best encore I have ever seen. They asked people to call out their favourite songs and played reggae versions of almost anything anyone could think of, from old reggae standards to The Clash. They played a song off of Tim Armstrong’s solo album (they were his backing band) and ended the night with Don’t Let Me Down by The Beatles, Dirty Reggae style. If you’re near Guelph I would suggest going to see The Aggrolites at Club Denim tonight, if you’re in BC they’ll be doing three shows in your area near the end of August (29, 30, 31). Bring your dancing shoes and have a great time!
“We need soul in our music. Dirty Reggae music!”
